ae92 speedometer issue

Postby Jingle Balls » Thu Jul 30, 2009 9:35 pm

Hi all

I've read a few existing threads on this topic but i'm confused and not really sure what I need to do.

I have an ae92 with the digital dash, which was running fine until all of a sudden the speedo stopped working. Now I read bits and pieces about that ae92 uses a mechanical (does this mean cable?) as opposed to electronic sender and signal. But does this apply with my digital dash model?

What's likely to have happened, and what would my first thing to attempt to resolve be.

Cheers

find out if there is a cable coming out the back of the gear box or a plug with some wires coming out of it. that should give you an indication of how it works.

my ae92 has a digi dash with a 2 piece cable drive to the back of it, the bottom one broke not long ago. Got a 2nd hand one greased it up and it is good as new

Toyota has made the 2 piece speedo cable with a weaker link part on purpose, so if it snaps, it snaps in an easily accessable area. Ive actually snapped mine doing a huge boost! Took 1 minute to replace.

You can check it yourself, to see if it is the culprit or not. Simply find the speedo cable on the top of the gearbox near the back, its the only fat cable sticking out vertically. You will notice it is held in by a cap that you can undo with your fingers, it has grips, then 30cm up the cable there is a join, with the same cap that you can undo. That is the weaker link part of the cable that can snap, the piece that you want to check out.

Dont worry, its safe as. Play with it, you will know if its broken.

I have a spare one I think, if you need one.

Otherwise buy someone a pack of townies or box of piss to diagnose the problem.

Here's what happened to my AE92. Easy enough to fix. Unscrew from gearbox and seperate this portion from the rest of the cable.
