I'm down to what I think (fingers crossed!) is the last whine, rattle or vibration in the corolla. 99% sure its not the gearbox. Its mostly noticable on the open road, coasting is fine but as soon as I give it any gas at all it whines quite bad.

Its running a Hilux diff, with a reshimmed LSD head. What could be whining? Someone has said it could be a few things, not just bearing(s). Are these known for having problems or anything?

could be worn crownwheel teeth in the diff itself. Does it only whine while under load, no whine when you lift of and it starts to engine brake?

If I'm cruising at 100km and lift off completely, its silent.
If I give it throttle - even if its just enough to hold a steady speed - it will start whining.

crownwheel/pinon it is. sounds like what my diff is doing, maybe the lash was not properly set when it was shimmed up.

yip sounds exactly the same as the suzuki van diffs which wear the crownwheel.

not sure if it matters but it has been shimmed up pretty tight, is almost a locker, and locks up nicely in a straight line :lol:

whats the best way to fix it, or shut ut up? and whats going to happen if I leave it?
is some moreys oil stabiliser likely to fix it, or is that only for noisy bearings?

needs another CW & Pinion.

What ratio is it?

You could just put the reshimmed carrier into another diff head of the same ratio and away you go. I MAY have access to one.......

you could be luckey and tighten the lash and it might go away. no oil is going to stop the noise, eather way it will need to be pulled out to fix.

is driving it to meremere this weekend likely to cause major problems? or will it just be more annoying than anything?

well my s series diff has been like this for about as long as i have had the car for a daily, and rape every now and then. im sure the hilux is stronger but maybe more stress on it because its shimmed up,

you will most likely shave more metal off the teeth and into the oil. worst care is a few teeth blow off and your stuck with no drive.

my escorts diff was like this for years then the gearbox started to make noises in the end the gearbox was louder than the factory exhaust but it jot absolutely raped everyday

Yip definitely needs another crown wheel/pinion. If you leave it as frost said it'll steadily remove teeth off both and if your really lucky have a couple of gears missing.
Had this problem with my '86 when a supposed "qualified mechanic' at a dealership set-up the backlash in my t series diff head. Turned out the diff wasn't adjusted up properly, he adjusted backlash, the adjuster locktab wasn't secured properly and ended up winding the adjuster out as the car drove and ended up shearing the end of the axle.
Hopefully you don't have same problem but it's definitely something to watch out for.

Took it to Meremere and back on the weekend and noticed the whine disappears at about 115km. Its worse between 75 - 115km, under that it is still noticable, over that its virtually silent.

Also, not sure if its getting worse or I'm imagining it, but it seems to bind when turning into driveways alot more now - mostly when moving really slow. Not sure if its just because its shimmed up so tight or what but its as if its trying to skip like a locked diff, but its not scuffing the tyres if that makes sense :lol:

Still likely to be crown wheel / pinion?

finally got around to pulling it out, going to take it to a mechanic to get checked over, fingers crossed it is just the backlash that needs resetting. if the pinion is held still, there is a little bit of movement in the crown wheel (stuff all, but definitely noticable by hand)

is that normal or should the backlash not be evident by "feel"? don't seem to be any metal filings or anything in the oil etc, everything else looks to be pretty good otherwise.

yeh there should be some moment there. i forget what the clearance is now. doesnt have to be very far out to cause a wine
