wats required for a wof?

Postby 0EBUNY » Thu Oct 01, 2009 6:55 pm

ok got some questions for those of u who know a bit more about wofs.

my mums car went for a wof today and passed

:o

so one of the inner cv boots is completely in two pieces and was after the last wof

the tie rod ends boots are also split

theres no power steering fluid

theres oil pissing out the dizzy cap and its pooling on everthing underneeth

theres no oil left in the engine

i wondering about the boots being the main things they haven't even made any notes about any of it i thought at the least they would have a put a couple of notes saying it might pay to get that boot changed or top up the engine oil or even try and get some money out of her to fix stuff.

so are the boots required for the wof? or is it one of those dumb things that the joint underneath has to be busted before they pull u up on it?

im not vary impressed my mother knows absolutely nothing about cars and thinks im making a fuss about nothing (because i keep saying she needs to change the boots etc which i can get on staff discount and change) but she thinks if it needs doing they would have failed the wof or at least put a note they made a note about a tyre being close will need doing before next wof. but yea she dosent want to understand that doing the boot now will be cheaper then doing the whole joint later coz they would have told her.

pretty standard, if the boots are split for the cv and tie rod end then the joints are eventually going to shit themselves. potentially dangerous.
if the car came with power steering then it has to work.
not allowed any decent oil leaks, the dizzy o-ring is $&#$%. (but dont pull it out unless you can reset the timing)
the engine condition itself doesnt matter, so long as its not dangerous.

wof checks go by the bible called the virm vehicle inspection da-da-da-da
its online here: http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/certifiers/virm-in-service/

wof checks are full of it, to prove a point I took my car through 3 different wof stations here in the same week, all 3 picking up on different things, things that didnt matter, missing things that did matter etc.

Not a WOF fail unless it is dropping grease onto something like brake components.

That said ... 8O

Pretty much an instant fail if your car does any weird shit (pulling to either side = weird shit)

Biggest problem I see here is that your mum drives on our roads in that piece of shit car.

No oil in the engine... why would the inspector care??

Should ride a bike IMO

Another reason that VTNZ should not be allowed to give a car a WOF.

Why because they fail cars that could potentially drive off the road or into oncoming traffic? Yeah bad VTNZ!

VTNZ have always taken mine for a drive around the building and they can tell if it's pulling either way while it's on the rollers.

90% of WOF inspections done at VTNZ involve about 15 metres of test drive.
So they don't fail many cars that should fail for many reasons.

They make up on not test driving cars by failing them on trivial things, so they still fail as many cars as other places, just on stupid things

Even the guys that have done my WOF reviews (check us WOF guys to make sure we are doing a good job) say that VTNZ are the worst! If you want an easy WOF go to them, the staff at VTNZ stations are all failed or 'has been' mechanics. As they do not work on cars they end up being years behind on technology and fail a lot of things that are not faulty!

agree completely, although they do seem to feel obliged to fail you on something.

I usually disconnect the horn and take a reverse lamp etc out before I go for an inspection there, then they are happy when they find those easy faults and tend to ignore more major stuff that requires getting dirty to see. you can pop them back in in the carpark and walk inside for a pass mark so theres no need for a return trip

My ute I just bought had a very new VTNZ wof, and I picked up a couple of things that were of concern that had been missed, but the item they had failed it on first time round was superficial.
