Old for old Aristo would be better car than BMW 5 series.
BMW does not age as well as Aristo.
Coolant issues, interior falling apart, electrical problems, diff problems, brittle plastic bits in the engine bay, expensive parts list goes on for 5-10yo BMW. Aristo on other hand does not have these issues.

Indeed, I feel the same way.
My BMW has had overheating problems, a stupid speedo problem and some annoying rust issues which have taken too much time and effort to sort out. I just want the thing gone.

It doesn't seem like there are many Aristo's around. I've been looking, but haven't seen any at all on the streets driving around. I haven't seen any in car yards as yet either. There are a few on Trademe, but not the selection I had hoped for.

Ok, so after a bit of research. Aristo's can still be imported from Japan. The problem is the only one that can be is a 2000 model as it has a "GH" frame number. It seems the 2000 model Aristos are quite rare and even in Japan are not as cheap.

Another option that's popped up is a Mark II IR-V (JZX110).
They seem very nice also. Better fuel economy than the Aristo, but I still must admit the Aristo is my favourite due to it's size ($hit loads more torque too)

Opinions on the JZX110???

JZX110 is not much smaller, similar torque, and generally great car.

Toyota Mark II 2.5 IR-V
size:4735 x 1760 x 1460
Power kw/rpm 206 / 6200
Toruqe Nm/rpm 378 / 2400
Weight:1530kg
weight/power:5.46 (kg/hp)

Toyota Aristo 3.0 V300
size:4805 x 1800 x 1435
Power kw/rpm 206 / 5600
Toruqe Nm/rpm 451 / 3600
Weight:1680kg
weight/power:6 (kg/hp)

Looks like from start MarkII will be slightly faster due to weight advantage. Although torque is lower on MarkII it peaks a lot earlier.

Yeah, I've been looking at those specs too.

It did seem odd the 1JZ peaks in torque earlier, but I was assuming it was something to do with the sequential turbo setup of the 2JZ, or something along those lines. Maybe the difference is in the heads. I've heard the 1JZ head is better.

Either way, peak torque at 2400rpm is awesome. It also seems the 1JZ is a bit more of a revvy motor as well (later peak power).

The 528 is the best overall (in my opinion) best weight balance and a compromise between handling and straight line power. Was definately one of the most sucessful cars that segment has ever seen..

it WILL cost more to run than an aristo/lexus gs300 - but it's an infinately better car. Unless you really love the aristo shape and you already have your heart set on it, I would at least take it for a long test drive over some more challenging roads to see if it's really what you want...

good god man. 528?? you cannot be serious

wow a few silly stereotypical opinions i see

fair enough I suppose this being a toyota forum

all i'll say is - remember 99% of enjoyment from car ownership comes from driving it. not watching the l/100km figures or changing the oil filter.
take a few weekend test-drives down some back-country roads - even somewhere like Howick to Maraetai or Takanini-Clevedon run should make things pretty crystal clear.

I'll agree on one thing though - forget about Holdens!

99% of the fun comes from driving it, and 99% of the pain comes from maintaining it. (accidents aside, hah)

there is definitely a balance there somewhere!
i've said it before but i find most BMWs pretty meh to drive (with some obvious M badge exceptions)

I am planning on going test driving. I'll take a JZX110 out and see what they're like, but I'm havin trouble finding an Aristo.

I have no doubt in my mind that I will like how an Aristo drives though.
