is 75-76mm I/D pipe easy to get?

Postby RomanV » Wed Dec 02, 2009 6:16 pm

I need some pipe, aluminium or stainless I guess, that's 75-76mm inside diameter.

3" aluminium pipe = 3" OD unfortunately...

So what's the next closest size up, that's available? Is there 3 1/4"?

It's for an airflow meter housing, so needs to be just right.

Seems not. By rights, tube is measured by outside and pipe inside. The closest I can find is Sched 40 S/S pipe in 3" which gives you an inside measurement of 77.92, but a hefty 5.49mm wall thickness.

You could try high pressure PVC unless its for a turbo application of course as then the heat would probably be too much unless you had a very good intercooler.

How long a piece do you need? I will have a kick around in the offcut bin see if I can find anything that suits...

Not too long!

150-200mm should do it... Maybe shorter if you had a short piece kicking around!

You should be able to get 3.5" with 0.25" wall thickness. If the outside diameter is too big just get it turned down.

Other alternative mignt be to get some 3" thin walled tube and expand it, though it might be a bit difficult to expand a piece that long :?

How thick does it need to be? I have some thin 1-1.5mm(ish) alu pipe at work I can measure if thats not too thin.

Just roll up a flat piece and weld it.

Any luck?

I had a measure up of some aluminum pipe we use at work on gas water heaters.

77mm internal
80mm external

These will not be EXACT as I only have a cheap plastic vernier caliper to measure with.

Flick me a PM if you want some anyways, probably forget to check back here. Cover postage and its yours.

How about some carbon fiber tube ...?
http://www.carbonfibretube.co.nz/index.php?pr=Carbon_Tube_Prices

in a 1.2mm wall
75mm id 77.4mm od $ 87.14 p/mtr 0.44kg
76mm id 78.4mm od $ 88.28 p/mtr 0.45kg

if it is only for the Afm it would be ideal.

and they are in the back of beachhaven as well.

Thanks for the advice people.

I may have a solution involving a factory airflow meter housing.

If it doesnt work out, will investigate some of these other options.
