Where to get some metal/steel?

Postby DeeCee » Thu Dec 03, 2009 11:33 am

Morning :)

I'm filling in a couple of holes in the engine bay as a friend is going to help me out on Monday with some welding.

Where can i get some steel from in Lower Hutt? Or should I just ring up some engineering shops and see if they have some scraps around?

Oh - and what thickness should I use? 3mm? I don't have a clue about welding and metal

Try fletchers easy steel or steel and tube. I've bought steel from Fletchers up here just walked in off the street

How thick typically would one want steel sheet to be for panel repairs?

I need a few full sheets (almost :P) to fix rust holes in a project

Does it need to be thicker in areas such as the pillars?

3mm is too thick.
0.75mm is standard panel steel thickness.
Pillars I think are the same thickness but usually have several layers/shapes sandwiched together for strength.
Not all engineering shops will have stuff that thin.
I recommend just rocking up and asking politely if you can go through their scrap bin. Works for me. Take something to measure with and CASH.
Stuff from the scrap bin is usually sold off the books, so its cheap. If you eftpos it, you will end up paying tax because they have to put it on the books.
Full sheets are pretty big. Never bought one. I guess they would be about 1.2x2.4M thats a LOT.
Twin Lakes sheet metal on Blenheim st in Upper Hutt has the stuff. But there will be someone in LH.

good info to know about the thickness. My friend Nick has a metal fabricator at the back of his work so will be getting some off cuts and scrap for me to use :)

If you need some scraps for filling holes etc I think we have some sitting in the garage. Pm me how much you need :)

As for getting cheap sheets, try asking for top sheets. They should be cheaper due to having some strapping marks in them (so dad says).

i get mine from steel and tube
but you will find places like that won't sell part sheets/lengths
so 1.2x2.4 sheets! and 5-6m lengths!
but steel is cheap, i got a sheet of 0.9 galv for $59 +gst
Thats about half an Imps worth!

engineers etc will prob sell smaller sections, but will cost more

I cut a hole in my bonnet and used that to make custom intake pipes. It's about 1.2mm with paint.
I've also been working my way through the surround of an F & P washing machine. That's just on 1mm, I'm a greenie.

Agreed, we had a wrecked VL at my last flat, There wasnt much left of it by the time we moved out after cutting bits here and there for patches on other cars. Even made a new catcher for my lawnmower out of the bonnet.
