Anyone here work with exhausts?

Looking to get a bit of work done on my exhaust pretty soon, sick of it being so loud etc so thinking of going back to pretty much stock or similar to stock but stainless steel an slightly bigger. This is for my ae101 trueno.
Anyone on here in Christchurch work at Magoos or the likes of??

Why does it need to be stainless?
A mild steel "proper" exhaust system will make it quiet but still have good gains over a stock one.

Got a fart cannon? If so get a MUFFLER installed instead of the fart cannon.

Not sure why you would want stainless either tbh.

Yeh got a fart cannon haha, its time for it to go. Oh it doesnt need to be stainless. Will look on trademe for some mufflers tonight, need to know if anyone can do the grunt work

The only problem (probably) with your exhaust is the lack of muffler then. Personally i'm not sure its worth f**king around, just take it to a muffler shop, tell them you want to replace the fart cannon and get it done. Hang on to the fart cannon and sell it on trademe.

I guess you might save a few $$ if you buy a trademe one (no going back if you have problems) but by the time you get someone to weld it on etc, you might not save enough to make it worthwhile.

Wait a couple months and i'll weld a muffler on for you as part of my welding learning

Yeah ok, im not real clued up with exhausts, will i need another resonator or nah? I have two atm, and muffler will be a straight swap if the inlets are the same size?

If you have 2 resonators already, adding a proper muffler should make quiet for sure.

And yeah, so long as the inlets are the same / very close will be an easy job for any exhaust place.

mild steel
no big tip, on end of muffler
a length of pipe after the last muffler, will make muffler work properly
bigger internal area of muffler = quieter (im talking volume, not just because a bigger muffler is likely to have more baffles etc,,)
if your using non straight through muffler. id use a size or 2 up over your exhaust tube size, as alot of them have alot more restriction than a straight bit of pipe.

Save some stress and go to an exhaust shop, most of the stuff on trademe will be rubbish quality. You get what you pay for, in this case a bad sounding exhaust most likely

As in two rear muffler like they came from factory?
It can be done will obviously cost a lot more as there will need to be two mufflers and more pipe work.

You just need one big muffler at the back where your fart cannon of doom is. Get a "turbo flow" type muffler in or a chambered/baffled one. It'll quieten it down lots and still sound really nice.

Do you currently have any problems with nasty raspy sound?

exhaust routes the gases to the back of the car, muffler makes the noise quiet on the way. You could technically have a straight pipe exhaust that performs no muffling.

The product they are selling is not a WOF'able product as being able to modify the exhaust system is not allowed.

That's not exactly correct.
The system it not able to be easily changed, ie with valves or switches etc. If it it requires tools (screwdriver etc) to be changed it is not "easily changed".

My mate asked about the legality about silencers when he was getting his race car certed and that's what he was told. Some silencers can be removed just by using finger power, they are not legal. So if it has a nut or a screw it should be fine.

Having said that, I have seen on here that people have been told to weld their silencers in, which seems a bit off to me.

There is little difference between flicking a switch and unwinding a screw and the method of modification is not specified in the rule.
Both methods would be "constructed or modified in a way that allows a person to interfere readily with its operation or reduce its effectiveness"

A WOF guy might pass it, but that doesn't mean he is following the rules... although in the case of a race car the vehicle's intended usage is a bit different... so maybe it was "overlooked"
