p/plate + trademe?

Ok long story short..

i discovered a plate on trademe while i was at work to buy...

I bid an funny enough i WIN!! woohoo

I then check the questons + answers after winning to see this :

hey! these plates are not yours to sell. why havnt you sent them back when i sold you the car? its illegal to evan try sell them. your better of sending them back and im going to seek legal advice aswell as a police report. for anyone who buys these plates they are still in my name so you wont be able to register them anyway. sammy124 (130 ) 11:47 am, Tue 9 Mar
Answer: Hey! you sold us the car as a working car it had to be towed back. we are selling the plates to pay for repairs buy them back off us if you want them, or you are welcome to have the whole car back for what we paid for it. So what I want to know is,

Can i go threw with buying these plates???
how can I check ownership on these plates? (there registered to a 91 corolla wagon)

i beleive that you have to check with p plates as well, if you sell or buy a car with p plates, it has to mention that the p plates come with the car, they are seperate and AFAIK not included in the sale unless actually stated (just because they are on the car doesnt mean they are included)

Situation as I can gather from the comments:

sammy124 sold a car to plate seller stating that it was in working order.
Car was NOT in working order, and had to be towed back.
Plate seller is looking to sell the plates and make the money for the repairs.


Theres 2 possible outcomes here:

1. The car was sold with a registration plate change, so the plates do legally belong to the plate seller. A mistake on sammy124's behalf,

or

2. The car was sold, but the registration was not sold with the car, meaning that the plate seller isn't legally entitled to sell the plates, no matter what they think.

My guess is situation 2 probably applies here.

Even if it turns out that you are legally in the right, you'll have one or other party upset about the deal and the plates will be a political football. You'll probably get your car damaged or plates pinched in the not too distant future

Or if they report the plates stolen - you could get dragged in for theft while they sort out the trouble between the other two - sure - will work out in the end, but hows that for a way to spend an afternoon.......

Haha, ok - those are my old plates, which I sold/swapped with fx gt on here some years back. Not the ZROGRP ones which got nicked.

Long story short - Sam, you're shit outta luck there man, even though they are yours, unless you can prove the person stole them then they own them. I had the same issue with a certain caryard in Chch trying to sell me back my plates even though the PP ownership papers state they're mine. Possesion being 9/10ths law or some crap like that.
In my case, as I knew this particular caryard tended to hang PP's on the wall in their office not registered to a vehicle, I simply had them remade and have them back legally in my possession.
So pretty much, Callum, legally you're in the clear if you do get them...its up to you whether you actually go through with the purchase or not.

Nah it just had a random electrical gremlin, which would cause it to die randomly now and then. Pretty sure it was a dud earth somewhere, but I hate chasing electrical issues


Been contemplating getting another one actually
