On prefacelift (majority of 165) they are all open, with centre manually lockable. Thus it feels like FWD. Hence me using ST205 gearbox and rear diff.

yea they can be a put push or pull on the old gearbox

the viscous centre box is alot better i have them for both of my st165s. you can pick them up fairly cheap too

there was days when it would act like a rwd, and also just decide to sledge you everywhere

then days it would just decide to be a front tug hahaha

Suspension setup has a lot to do with it. Mt ST165 had hard Bilsteins and it was definately rwd orientated.

The ST165 was released in October 1986. The first 2274 cars produced were for the Japanese market only. They differed from the later cars in a number of aspects, including a different gearbox (with a manually locking centre differential instead of the later viscous differential). The front brake calipers are different and the front spoiler has the bottom edge painted black. They also lack the facelift changes made to all Celicas in 1987 (grill, taillights and interior changes). Due to the limited production run these are the rarest GT-Four model of all (possibly excluding the ST185 Rally).

Not sure is Mr Richard was referring to all ST165s or just pre facelift with the "rarest GT-Four" comment.

I have seen ST165s with chassis numbers over 8000

In regards to the understeer/oversteer issue? If you put a stiffer anti-roll bar in the rear it helps a bit apparently, promoting a bit more oversteer. I had one made up by Smiths Steel I think, through autolign. Yet to be tested in the project car as the fuel tank and rear subframe are in bits.

I get plenty of oversteer now, no understeer at all, unless stupidly coming in without any power.

Saying that I have stiff bilstein shocks, white line swaybars and strut braces.

nice Sergei. When did you get the whiteline swaybar? I tried getting one about a year ago with no luck. They sent me a ST185 item. Which is similar but dose not compensate for the bulge in the floor where the abs unit is under the rear seat.

They no longer make the st165 item

they are discontinued through whiteline mate. Your only chance would be to keep an eye on trademe and ebay

Yer. they still have the jig I think. Autolign contact tried to see if whiteline could get one made as a 1 off. But it ended up being cheaper to have one made here.

i sold it to howard in auckland who seized it then i bought it back and it disapeared off the face of this earth... so if anyone has a badly painted st165 floating around i would like it back its very centimental to me.

Not sure if its a replica or genuine, will get a better look tomorrow, didn't see if its for sale either :? Car sales is auto court at the end of andersons bay road if anyone local wants to take a look.
