Boost controllers

Im looking at getting a boost controller for, yes, wait for it, my diesel truck.

Ive already manipulated the wastegate actuator via fitting washers, but Im looking for a little bit more 'control' over the adjustment.

I dont need anything special, sure, id love a nice flash digital one, but realistically an in cabin manual one will do.

Any suggestions?

Anyone have a good, but cheap one for sale?

I use this. Cheap and works well.
Downside, its almost impossible to adjust, 1mm of moment = 2 or 3 psi, change. So its very sensitive.

Turbosmart makes the boost T.
Feels nice and solid, and has 1 click increments for adjustment.

You don't want washers, what you want is a pull spring over the actuator.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

I would'nt skimp on a boost controller I use the 1st generation Blitz SBC I-D controller and they give actual really accurate control of the wastegate being a twin solenoid design.

what turbo do you have on it? or is it a factory turbo one? i take it we are talking safaris here..


i turbo'd my old mans one not long ago. goes awesome with some boost and a tweak on the injector pump

The washers have worked well for several years.

ok, so Ive purchased my "manual boost controller" (very small tap for air bubbles in fish tanks). So how do I plumb it in? I understand all these do is allow a small amount of pressure to vent to atmosphere instead of being added into the boost actuator equation.

ok, so if I put this in the line, the valve will allow the boost to build up a little more.

Problem I come up with is, my gauge is in the actuator pressure line, so If I put this valve in there also I feel the gauge will read lower than the actual boost pressure.

Am I correct in this thinking?

Do I need to change where I take my gauge reading from?

yeah you should really take your boost reading from the plenum, generally gives you the best idea of what the engine is really seeing.

I think its a diesel. On a petrol think about what the gauge would do if you closed the throttle and didn't have a bypass valve.

Sorry Nick, but I respectfully disagree here. Firstly, as has been mentioned, it's a diesel so there is no throttle body. Secondly, even if there is, what's the point in measuring before the throttle body? At partial throttle you'll have a reasonable pressure drop across the throttle (it is, afterall, a throttle!).

Of course it all depends what you want your boost gauge to tell you, if you want to know how much pressure is in your intercooler piping then certainly, go before the throttle, but if you want to know how much pressure is going into your engine, then go after the throttle body.

i still say add a spring. boost will be more stable and come on faster over a bleed valve. plus wont limit the throw of the actuator like washer mod does.

I brought a 2nd hand one of these for my evo and it's about 1000x easier to use then the greddy profec unit I have in the starlet. It seems to work pretty well on for an internal gate setup.
