shitty way to lose a young life,

He will go to jail and be forgotton after a month. The media will hype something new and everyone that should care (IE the hooligans out doing this shit) will forget.
Long term jailtime for this kid is not the answer. Car crush, yes. Lots of community service, yes. Loss of licence for forever, maybe.
A car crush itself is a massive statement to the skidding community out there. But it also introduces more potential problems as well.

He already crushed his car... well unless he's going to pay to fix the right off worthy damage out of his own pocket.
Community service, that would be a good idea if people did it. Its always on the news how people just don't do it, so the courts fine them, or add more hours, and it just cycles around until the courts give up.
I do think though that crushing cars of repeat offenders would send a message. But it won't happen, system is too pussy to hurt peoples feelings.

Yeah, also a limit on unpaid fines,
Once you rack up a set amount, you loose your licence,
until your fines are paid,
Caught driving a car while disqualified, car gets taken,
repeat the process again and caught driving again,
car gets crushed.
And to those who say but what if he is driving someone else's car,
Would you loan you car to a mate who is disqualified if you know it will get crushed if he's caught,
i know I wouldn't,
and if it his mum's car,
same deal she either says he stole it and he goes to jail, or she loaned it to him and it gets crushed.
And In this case I think a little jail time will help,
but having no liscence for the next 10 years when all his mates have liscences, and wont let him drive their car because if he gets caught it gets crushed will be a long reminder.

how much more serious of a crime do you need before you get jail,
if he don't get serious jail time then its no better then cops giving out fines to drop kicks who cant pay it,
a slap on the wrist FFS.
in ANY other country he would get minimum 7 years,
im not perfect, i do drive my car hard, i wont say much as this is a forum and it has rules, but a time and place for everything, i make dam sure im away from any harm,
just last week my mate and i where organizing a gymkhana on private land,
tui add:
don't kill! you'll get jail time

Not true, yes, he fkd up, but the BOY paid the ultimate price. The driver gets to live life with his family, his guilt will fade, yes, people will know him as the boy that did it, but that will fade also. The familys pain of losing there child will always be there.
Hail time will remind the driver EVERY day in a major way what hes done.

make an example of him to set a new precedent for fatality caused by reckless driving.
Wether it was an accident or not does not bring the little boy back to life. Will jail time teach him a lesson, no probably not anything over what he is already going through
Will it stop other dickheads doing dum sh1t probably not, but if enough people get done for it people the dickheads will hopfully start getting the picture that they need to take responsability for their actions.
although a bit hard with the current joke of a judicial system at the moment.
The whole country needs to harden up against criminals, its a shame to see that criminals get more rights than their victims and at us, the taxpayers cost.

It's easy to waggle the finger isn't it. Another great trait of New Zealand.
/sarcasm.
I agree NZ needs to harden the $$% up.
I agree the Justice system is soft.
I agree he should be punished.
But I do not agree that jail time is the answer.
I also think you should all take a step back and stop being so close minded, YOU never killed anyone, it's not YOU up on that booth. YOU don't have to live with it for the rest of your life. And as for whoever said the guilt will fade. Have you killed someone before? How qualified are you to make that statement?
It isn't as simple as "He is a criminal, send him to Jail", no wonder our jails are so overpopulated. And imagine if NZ were even LESS soft with this kind of "LOCK HIM UP" attitude. We would need MORE jails and that equals MORE tax payer money.
I don't know about a lot of you, but I'm more for constructive punishment.

I think he should do community service for the Family who he has affected.
Mow their lawns, do gardening etc, seeing the mother of the child would remind him everyday of what he has done. But, on the flipside, it would also remind the family.
