4age auto to manual conversion

Postby mikeymike » Sat Aug 28, 2010 2:15 pm

I've decided that the auto just needs to go from my smallport red top ae92 fx-gt. I've got a ae92 gtz lsd box to go in. Just wondering a few things:

1. Do I have to run a 4agze clutch set up with the box? (I've already got a 4agze flywheel)

2. Will the auto shafts fit or will I have to change something there too?

3. Pretty sure I'll need manual gearbox mounts, but just checking that the auto ones won't fit?

Cheers,
Mike

Sell that box, and buy a C56. E51 ratios aren't really suited to a 4AGE
1988 KE70 Wagon - Slowly rusting
1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons
2018 Ranger - Because workcar
1997 FD3S RX-7 Type R - all brap, all the time
OMG so shiny!

E51 gear ratios aren't that bad, its just the long 3rd gear you might struggle with.

Just looked up the speeds vs. rpm online. E51 has longer ratios (100.88kph @ 3000rpm), C56 (89.92kph @ 3000rpm). It's only a daily driver so this shouldn't be too much off a biggy?

Certainly you will need the correct driveshafts for the E series gearbox
You will need the correct mounts for the gearbox
You will need to use the correct clutch as the E series box has a bigger diameter input shaft

You will lose some power as there will be bigger losses through the gearbox
Also the gearbox weighs about 15 or 20kg more than the std C series manual gearbox

The ratios are way more suited to the extra mid/low end torque of the GZE engine

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Your car will be slower with the E than the C box. My AW was 3 seconds quicker around the old Taupo track with the C box than the E box - it was the only change I made between race meets. As Kinloud has said, it's the extra weight of the gearbox, the internal components and the driveshafts that do it. Although the E series flywheel and clutch are lighter, they won't fit inside the C series box.
See ya

Thansk for that guys. Hmmm might have to sell it and look for a c56. Be cheaper and better in the long run.
