Turbo oil drain issues ??

Postby AE86fan » Tue Aug 31, 2010 1:57 pm

My turbo has been smokey especially noticable when deccelerating. There is obvious oil in the exhaust housing which would indicate that the seals are stuffed.

I spoke with a guy from specialist Turbo shop and he said that it is probably an oil drain issue caused by either running my sump overfull or bore damage which was pressurising the sump......makes sense.

He also said that if if I resolve the above 2 issues the seals may not be damaged in any way and it may solve the problem without a rebuild.

I dont know enough about how the oil seals work in turbos to know if the problem might only be temporary, has anyboby had any similar experiences???

The oil drain has to be gravity fed straight into the sump, no U shape joints (Like you find in a kitchen basin drainage).

I believe it is because when the oil coming out from the turbo is more like a foam / candyfloss type looking thing. Lots of air, pressure build up. There needs to be no pressure build up in the oil drain line, air or oil.

I have experienced this first hand with the GReddy TD06 i had, blown the oil seal.

Another workshop on the shore also did this without my approval on my other GT turbo, and it started smoking, luckily they didn't "test drive" my car very far, I reversed their "mod" and my turbo was a happy chappy again.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

Cool thanks, so the turbo might be salvageable. I will try running the oil level a little lower and maybe raise the level of the where the drain meets the sump.

Hopefully with less pressure in the sump with some new pistons and rebore, problem solved.

how are your oil breathers setup? you could be pressurizing the crank case under boost. which will result in a cloud of smoke coming off boost.

do you have a restrictor in the feed?

no need to drop the oil level if setup right.
