The cam gears dont actually hit the strut tower...
You just cant fit the cambelt cover on.
Although, I couldnt even take the cambelt cover off the redtop engine without dropping the motor out anyway.
Yeah, nah, its too much work basically.
Intake manifold is wrong shape and points wrong way.
Extractors point wrong way.
Sump/oil pickup is on the wrong angle, as engine is designed to be upright instead of tipped over.
Water lines etc for engine are not quite right for MR2.
You also have the giant PITA known as the electronic throttle body that requires pedal sensors and what not to work...
And the returnless fuel line setup which sucks nuts to transplant.
Most of the above reasons are why I actually converted a single VVTI engine to an upright configuration, wiring and fuel lines and everything else is a million times more simple that way.
Long story short, if you want a VVTI engine in an MR2, just buy that redtop, cant argue with the price!
Way more low end power, high end power, fuel economy etc than a gen 2 engine, better in every way.
IMO it's only really worthwhile if you can keep the car quite light though, if you're big on creature comforts and fancy stereo installs and what not, 3SGTE is a better bet.
Good fun though!
