Conversion: 3SGE VVti into 2nd* Generation MR2?

Postby UZZ30 » Thu Sep 09, 2010 1:40 pm

G'day,

A friend of mine is considering doing this conversion. A later model 3SGE dual VVTi into an early 90s MR2.

Has anyone done such a conversion before?

I assume most of is relatively simple bolt up work... would any rewiring be required? I would imagine the ECU - Loom plugs would be different.

Any input, links to other threads would be appreciated.

Cheers.

the dual VVTi engine wont fit, one of the VVTi cam sprockets interferes with the strut tower, need to go single VVTi motor from a Caldina, Celica or MR2. Look for RomanV's old project thread, he did just that.

Ps. early 90s = first generation MR2? I think not :P

Duhh Second Generation.

Ahh interesting to know that RE the Cam obstruction. I guess that is why its best to ask.

I check his old post out.

Thanks!

It seems to fit (just) but I'm not sure if in this pic he has moved the motor over slightly away from the strut tower or used a precision adjusting tool to bash at the tower for a bit more clearance.

There's someone else trying it here, though its more arguing about it than much progress.

Though redtop motors seem very cheap atm...

wow that is cheap! Makes me wish I had another car that could benefit from a 3SGE...shit I should buy another AW11 just so I can put that in it :D

Anyway back on topic, are you sure that engine is a black top? It doesn't look like the intake cam sprocket is as deep as they look in other pictures

You're right, I hadn't noticed that before in that shot. The exhaust vvti gubbins do stick out further than the intake one anyway.

The rest of the pics in the album are here

Yeah that motor and Roman's old box were very tempting 8)

The cam gears dont actually hit the strut tower...

You just cant fit the cambelt cover on.

Although, I couldnt even take the cambelt cover off the redtop engine without dropping the motor out anyway.

Yeah, nah, its too much work basically.

Intake manifold is wrong shape and points wrong way.

Extractors point wrong way.

Sump/oil pickup is on the wrong angle, as engine is designed to be upright instead of tipped over.

Water lines etc for engine are not quite right for MR2.

You also have the giant PITA known as the electronic throttle body that requires pedal sensors and what not to work...

And the returnless fuel line setup which sucks nuts to transplant.

Most of the above reasons are why I actually converted a single VVTI engine to an upright configuration, wiring and fuel lines and everything else is a million times more simple that way.

Long story short, if you want a VVTI engine in an MR2, just buy that redtop, cant argue with the price!

Way more low end power, high end power, fuel economy etc than a gen 2 engine, better in every way.

IMO it's only really worthwhile if you can keep the car quite light though, if you're big on creature comforts and fancy stereo installs and what not, 3SGTE is a better bet.

Good fun though!
