oil temps during track thrash???

Postby d1 mule » Tue Sep 14, 2010 10:35 pm

finally had a proper play/ drift in my ae70 today after a long wait,

just curious as to what oil temps i should be expecting to see??

its a 4agte with an oil cooler, but the cooler isnt really in the optimum place for air flow.

was seeing about 120 degrees C all day, the water temp was pretty hot most of the day too but hopefully some new fans i just brought will fix that.

cheers

Fans will make it worse under speed (they are there only when stationary/moving slow). 120C oil temp is pretty good for track.

hate to know what temps you would be seeing with no cooler eh?

was told by a hydraulics guy that i wouldn't want the oil getting above 100 C as it starts to break down. but it seems awfully low seeing as marks (1I1) corolla sees 120ish just driving around town. makes me want to put a oil temp guage in my car. hmm :?

may i ask where your oil cooler is placed?how un-optimal is it?

the oil cooler is mounted right up front but the monster of a '80s bumper is right in the way
the cooler is directly behind the bumper in this pic

hopefully i can whip up some sort of ducting before saturday which will hopefully help airflow to the radiator. the fans are thermostacically controlled if that makes a difference

na fans dont do anything once your moving, if its getting hot whilse moving and giving it shit, then possibly water pumps on way out (corroded/missing fins) or the radiator is just not big enough

90degrees is pretty common for just town driving. 110degrees open road driving

ah mybad your temp gauge is hard to read sometimes. lol.
i used to know when my oil was getting too hot in the 4afe cause the oil press gauge used to flicker when it giving prolonged periods of thrashing. haha new engine doesn't do it though

looks like a bit of airflow would help a bit with the cooler. can't drop it down a bit to pick up some airflow under the bumper?

120C is dam hot for oil.

You want to be between 90-100 if you can. Any lower and it starts to be a little too viscous, any higher and the opposite....

There's a reason why oil cooler thermostat's OPEN at around 80-85C....

Get a massive oil cooler and then buy one of these:

135 is still acceptable but I wouldn't want to have mine that high.....

We have had diff oil temps over 200, and i wouldn't worry with engine oil temps of 125c or less.

120 deg is quite common, if its going higher I suggest you run a better oil that can handle those temps like Motul, Elf etc.

yeah what oil are you using?
i used to use the castrol out of the tank at work but it didnt seem to like the thrashing so switched to 10w60 edge. im only going by pressure but pretty sure its handling the temperatures a lot better

maybe the oil is trying to save us from the fluro? :p

Where is the temperature probe?
Is the gauge accurate? Has it been calibrated?
There are a number of factors that could affect accuracy of your oil temp readings.

If you have concerns upgrade to fully synthetic as it copes better with high temps,
I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the oil temp sensor should be in the sump?

i would say rigging up a sprayer would be a bad idea, you would be introducing cold oil to a hot engine, thermal shock is never good.

Not including the fact that sprayers are probably frowned upon on tracks because you're going to be introducing water to a possibly dry tack.
