Replaced faulty voltage regulator but still no charge :(

Postby cat007 » Sun Oct 03, 2010 7:02 pm

So I replaced the voltage regulator that had a visibly broken bit inside - but there's still no charge going to the battery.

I'm guessing now, the thing to replace, or at least inspect would be the alternator....

Seems strange that the alternator would blow at the same time as the voltage regulator?

Does anyone know what other cars I could find a replacement alternator on, for a 1987 Hiace with a 4Y engine....

I'll take a trip to pick a part next weekend

Thanks

Hunt

Ok at either of the batteries there's 12.6v. I have a blocking diode so at the alternator Side of the diode there's <1v

there will be a 3 wire plug to the alternator as well as the main B+ stud.

What voltage do you get on the wiring with the alt unpluuged and the ign on? One wire should have power with the key on, the other two wont.

Thanks for that!

I'll check this when I get home tonight. I should be checking this without the engine running and the IG turned to ON yeah?

Ok out of the 3 pins - the two that a side by side, have 13.3V on (i.e. full battery voltage) and the 3rd pin on the plug has 6.3V on....

I tested the plug without it being plugged into the alternator....

Should I plug it in and try and test? Would that change anything?

Also I should point out that the old voltage regulator looked like this:

Image

The new one, however, doesn't have the big bit on the top (which appears to be a giant relay) and looks like this (although it's in a plastic case, not metal):

I'm guessing it's different because it's newer and we have better solid state tech than we did back in 1987?

Cheers

What else could be causing this? If I'm getting voltage where I shouldn't on the alternator, what could that be?

Been a while since I did much with the old externals,

but I would have expected only one power fed to the alt in that 3 pin plug.

Are you sure the reg is the right one as there about 6 different versions that all look identical.

I'm pretty sure it's the right one. Unfortunately I have intelligently lost the receipt. It's not a toyota part but is supposed to be a 'match'.

I'll check everything either later tonight or tomorrow evening when I get a chance and get all the model numbers etc.

It does seem very odd that I'm getting +12v on 2 of the pins and 6 on one. Maybe I should test what voltage, if any, I'm getting on those same pins without the regulator plugged in...

Where you probing the Alternator or the plug when you did this?
