the 8k you mention would insure the most expensive car i'v ever insured for 13 years.

my point is, unless you drive a cheap car, or a car that you are willing to walk away from, then 3rd party isnt really enough cover. its not only about you having an accident.
its also about someone crashing into you. or into your parked car. a situation a TSer (rs13 i think) learned about a year or two a go.

I think thats true, but they take off an amount for the number of days cover, however we are talking 1.5months now.

Will just give them a ring and see what the story is

I cancelled the insurance on the WRX when I sold it, they're refunding me 9 months worth of premium  They only do refunds once a month though which is a bit gay, but oh well

Another perspective on this - I had a crash in my AW11 recently at an autocross. The repairs would have come out of my own pocket whether I had full insurance or not, as obvously insurance does not cover racing. I consider myself much more likely to have an accident while racing than while driving on the road, as you take far greater risks at far greater speed that you would on the road. Therefore I would rather save the cash every year by having third party only, keeping the rest of the money aside for any repair bills that may come up from offroad accidents.

 Obviously if you're only going to be paying $600 a year with a $250 excess then it changes things. I was refering to the $1000+ per year premiums with $1000+ excess.

$5000 to me is a cheap car when looking at those kinds of insurance costs... remember in a couple of years it is a $3000 car...

Each to their own though, i'm just trying to provide a different point of view with the numbers to back it up.

Megan here again...

Peace of mind is exactly why I have a job!! Because people want just that

Full Cover vs Third Party:
We had a car on third party because it was only worth $3,000. I was involved in an accident which wrote the car off, I believed i wasn't at fault and so did they other party. The other party was the city council so my insurance company didnt go up against the government and i was ruled as at fault (even though i freakin wasnt) So ended up paying a huge excess (am under 25) and losing a $3,000 car.... all to save a measly $200 a year! I use this story for my clients because I learnt the hard way and I don't want others to.

So you were paying around $800 a year for 3rd party?
Maybe you could provide all of the figures/options you had so that it is easier to see how your story relates to this discussion.

Just to make a point, my mums holden got pummeled by a lancer (Holden was parked, lancer shunted it 10m up a hill through a fence doing 50km/h) Anyhow, after being "repaired" the rear bumper fell off on the way home, the rear seats wouldnt fit, one mirror wouldnt move, the petrol flap wouldnt open etc... 3 months later, aa FINALLY remadied the situation, wont be insuring another car with them again

... where did you get $800 a year from? I said I saved $200 a year by insuring only for third party and not full cover. My options were third party cover for $150 or full cover for $350.

The story relates to the discussion because it shows that even though you may be a good driver, people can hit you, pleade innocence and render your third party protection useless.

So full insurance for a year for that vehicle was about 12% of the vehicle's worth... not 24% as is the case here.

But yes there are always cases where you loose when you shouldn't... the 3rd party did its job though and paid for the other car.

I've been talking to an associate of mine who works for an insurance company. There seems to be a lot of scaremongering going on here, just thought we'd clear up a few myths.

If you get the police involved when you have an accident (as you are required to report all non injury accidents to the police within 48 hours anyway), then if you are not at fault you will have a police report on your side. This goes towards protecting you if the other person claims that they were not at fault.

NAC insurance does not charge double excess any more.

For a car like this your best idea would be to get it valued before you get it insured. Then talk to your insurance company about market value vs your valuation. Different insurance companies will have different ways that this works, so talk to the sales people and they will help you with that.

Simply asking for a quote over the phone without providing the full picture won't give you an accurate idea of actual premium costs.

They can do race car insurance which covers you for everything except when your actually competing (Even covered on touring stages if you are doing rally)

Seconded :) Megan sorted the insurance on my Swift, and will organise my other cars when they are ready to go.

Emailed her last night around 11, got a phone call this morning when at around 11. Friendly, prompt response, im actually looking forward to hearing back from her  :P

Another HUGE plug for Megan from Bay Insurance. I had no problem at all sorting out insurance on both my Subaru and girlfriend's Mazda for excellent rates. Megan was quick, friendly and very helpful. I would recommend her to anyone requiring insurance for their vehicles.

Fifth-ed the comments above  She sorted the insurance on my Corolla, and for a damn good price.

Not exactly racecar material but its fairly modified and insured for a decent amount.

Just out of interest do any insurance companies cover vehicles while they're competing, such as the S15 that got written off at the Nightwars?

nope as soon as your car sets foot on a track, no insurance company will touch it, that is if you crash on the track. Because there are so many more risks involved
