Interior stripping - Do/Don'ts

Postby TazzieDevil » Fri Oct 15, 2010 11:55 am

Hey, So I'm stripping back the interior of my celica.
Is there a list of things I can and can't take out, standards to make note of for bare metal, edges etc etc?

leave door trims by seats in (sched A), I'd recommend leaving at least one seat in (drivers one would be my call  )

"Understeer" is when you hit the fence with the front of the car.
"Oversteer" is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car.
"Horsepower" is how fast you hit the fence.
"Torque" is how far you take the fence with you.

Would you want to look at the interior of a celica?
It is a myth that emos are contagious, and you may be infected. However, it is still widely accepted to wash your hands after physical contact

LOL - thanks guys, Stripping to make the car less appealing to steal... That and it should be as light as possible, cause the car itself is damn heavy. I'm hoping to get back out to slipway photoworks series, if I can actually not work on the weekends for once.

From the driver seat, pretend to be in a high speed roll over, and stretch your arms and legs out in all directions. If you encounter anything with your limbs, head, torso that due to interior trim being removed by you is now more pointy / bashy / stabby / cutty ... fix it or put the trim back again. That's how I've always approached the interior scrutineering.

I've found some astonishingly sharp bits in cars when people have ripped things out

Crap.... you said "Pretend" I knew I forgot something when I went about this.... LOL

In all seriousnesses though, I sat outside the mechanics today and stretched out my body parts, *te hehe* I couldn't reach anything "sharp" nothing that was going to cut or stab me, perhaps if it was a life / death situation, I could rub against a couple of parts and it might break some skin, but nothing leathal...

For wof purposes...if you remove the back seats do you have to weld up the bolt holes for the seatbelts so it becomes a fulltime 2 seater as such?? Or is that an old wives tale??

Or are you happy to be putting all the interior back in for each wof?

yep can confirm its an olds wifes tale!got my wof with no back seat. as long as you unbolt all of the seatbelts/fixtures associated with the rear seat then you are sweet. been driving it for a year like that with no problem. :D

When I got my WOF after removing back seats and belts, they asked if I wanted it changed to a 2 seater, or have it put on the cert as having removed the two seats... I didn't quite understand what the guy was getting at, but I just got it changed to being a 2 seater car.

If you have seats you need belts, if you have belts you need seats. So just remove both the belt and buckle, plus the seats and you're good to go.

Removing seatbelts will depend on the class and age of the vehicle, have a read through the seatbelt section of the WoF manual on the NZTA website.

Note LVV certification is not required where the only modification is the removal of seats and/or seatbelts. However, a class change and a new load rating may be required in some cases.

Passenger vehicles must have certain seatbelts fitted depending on the age of the vehicle and when it was first registered in NZ. My 1998 Mazda Demio for example is regularly WoF'ed with no rear seats but must retain the belts unless I do a class change. Some class changes will require permanent blocking of the seatbelt holes, particularly on newer cars. And remember, just because a WoF man passes it doesn't make it legal.

Incorrect.
I had compliance inspector call to LTSA and confirm that if seats AND seat belts are removed, it will pass warrant (without needing to do anything extra).

Remember this is not usual WOF man, but a compliance inspector (actually multiple of them).

It's not incorrect, that info is all from the WoF manual. As I said it will depend on the age and class of the car and when it was first registered here. There is no blanket rule, the advice on my was also checked with the LTSA/NZTA.
