Fuel tanks

Postby tsoob » Wed Oct 27, 2010 9:04 am

After the long weekend away I worked out that the tank in my car is WAY too small. 28litres is all it takes.

I only got from papakura to tauramnaui and had to nana it the last 30k's cos my pressure was dropping around corners.

What options are there for a bigger tank in an ae92?

What have you done to it to make it only take 28l?

i would say that your fuel gauge is just on the piss.

ae92's have the same size tank as the rest of them so should be close to 45litres.

you would be suprised how much is in them even after the empty light comes on. did about 150kms with the empty light on and that wasn't even empty even after that! the guages are shocking on them so just need to play it by ear most of the time.

just did a quick bit of research - apparently the AE92's Fuel-tank doesn't change per trim level and holds 13.2 Gallon - near as makes no difference 50L

so a few things could be:

as said fuel gauge\sender on the piss?

damage to tank? ie dented in? is this even possible?

or perhaps replaced due to damage with a much smaller tank?

are you able to try a different gauge and sender by any chance?

edit: - so basically what touge_ae101 said ;P

I am not sure how is this relevant, but my AE101 fuel tank is 50L. The most fuel I put in it was 49.6L - that was rolling in the petrol station without any fuel left (was student then  ).

I doubt AE92 has 30L tank. It will be close to 40-45L.

Our Ist has 40L tank (max I put was 39.2L).

Could try taking the level sender out and checking it's range of motion. Could also try bending the floats arm to reset and reposition it. Check nothing is interfering with the travel of the arm.

Did you have the light on at all?

its not the gauge. I already know its $&#$%, but it only fills up that far at the bowser, i know its low as the pressure drops and the car splutters.

Checked the contents of the fuel tank? Perhaps some contraband there?

I have heard of people doing track days moaning about fuel surge at 1/4 tank or so. Maybe you need to slow down for the corners a bit more :P
Where is your pressure reading taken from? Before or after surge tank?
Are you even running a surge tank?

no surge tank.

I dont have a gauge either, you can feel the pressure drop and the car splutters.

Doubtfull of contraband, i have had it out before when i did the pump.

I didnt build the car to go slow thru corners either :?

once you get under 3/4 of tank on my ae101 the gauge will go from 1/4 full to right full under cornering. they have shocking baffles in them i never run under 3/4 of a tank at the track its just not worth it.

def check your guage i think its on the piss.

breather

Postby fxgt race » Wed Oct 27, 2010 5:23 pm

Maybe check the breather tube isn't blocked, Could be trapping air in the tank when its filling if its blocked. Just a thought.

if has aftermarket pump in tank, check that its not mounted too far off the bottom, even if its only a bit higher up than factory will make quite a difference

Yeah that would be my pick.

Either it is a non efi tank with and EFI pump in it and doesn't have the std surge pot in it,

or the pump setup is not right.

Run the car till it surges, then pull out the sender and see how much is left in it.

ITS NOT THE GAUGE!!!! I DON'T HAVE A GAUGE!!!!!!!!!!! AT ALL!!!!!

what happens is the fuel gets down and the pressure drops and the car splutters.

I filled again last night, 29 litres, the car was really low as it was almost dying as i went into the gassy.

The pump may be installed wrong, but when i did it i remember putting it the way it was before. but ill check again

Install a gauge (even temporarily) to check what level it's showing when the car splutters etc? Or check the level visually.
