why does my silver top fxgt sound like a diesel ute?

Postby krock » Mon Nov 01, 2010 3:07 pm

Engine has a slight tick, kind of like a diesel ute? car has done 160km.

Is this a common problem with silver top 4ages? Is it tappets or something like that?

Any ideas on what to look at would be awesome,
cheers

ps. have searched but couldn't see anything that seemed relevant

Most likely your VVT pulley is stuffed.

can be a small exhaust leak if it is really noticable. (normally between the two sections of headers) or cracked headers. have had this a couple times after having everything apart.

or if its more of a refined tick it could be the vvt pulley rattle. not alot you can do about that except buy another one from our sponsor. not cheap though and has no effect on the engine with the rattle.

VVT pulley does not "tick", it does sound just like diesel (it "tacks"). Very common problem.

if it "sounds like a tractor" then its usually the VVT pulley

If its' doing it at idle only, chances are its' the VVT pulley.

Take the plug off the VVT oil solenoid on the front of the motor, and with the motor idling, put 12V onto the solenoid. If the rattle stops, and the revs drop a bit, its' the pulley thats' stuffed. Having a worn pulley doesn't do any harm to the engine, just sounds ugly!

I got a retail quote for a brand-new pulley a couple of years back for my FXGT, was over $1000.. or a second-hand one from a low-k motor for $50 from a wrecker, the one I ended up with still had a slight rattle but nowhere near as bad as the original.

i'm pretty sure my one had the vvt rattle and I masked it by putting some dyna mat sound proofing in the cambelt cover, go figure.

awesome cheers guys!

is changing the pulley a major job? can it be done with basic tools by someone with basic handyman skills?

also how is the best way to get 12v on to the solenoid ?

Technically if it is not too loud just leave it in peace.
Getting 12V to solenoid can be tricky if you never played with wires before ;).
Otherwise replacement of said part is like 1/2 - 3/4 of cambelt job. You could actually slide it out and slide it back in, without taking off the cambelt, but that can be very tricky/dodgy.

best way to get rid of it is to turn your stereo up

Yea, but atleast they don't blow head gaskets

Mine's been rattling for the past 2.5 years, but hasn't skipped a beat.
