Wheel spacers

Postby Lurkin » Sat Nov 06, 2010 10:38 am

The 17's Ive have an offset that is a little close to the strut tower for my liking... any ideas on the legality of wheel spacers to sit them out a bit further? i.e. is a cert required? cheers, Roy

Pretty sure a cert is required. The spacers have to be attached(semi permanently) to either the wheel or the hub/flange/disc thing.
There has to still be enough stud sticking out that you can wind the wheel nuts on ALL THE WAY, not just a few threads. I think it may be a minimum of 1.5 times the diameter of the stud, so at LEAST 18mm. Or you may find your wheels falling off.

You can get longer studs from drivenperformance

Wheel spacers need to be bolt on, hub centric on both the hub and the wheel, and certified.

Driven performance has correct ones for Toyota in varying thicknesses.

ok.. consensus seems to be a cert is required = too hard basket. might just keep an eye out for a replacement set of 17's then :(

When you say "a little close" do you mean it's touching?, 1mm gap?, 5mm gap?

2-3mm should be fine as long as you don't bend the rim.

is it the 17's that are close to the strut or the tyre?

i solved the problem by going to a 205 down from 215. got heaps of clearance now!

oh its far enough away to be safe... as long as the rim doesnt get bent - but... looks a little odd tho, as they sit in abit far. nevermind, sounds like its going to be easier to just change the rim, than add spacers.

Cost of spacers + Cost of cert < Cost of new rims?

lol yeah didn't mean brand new when I said new rims. You'll be doing well to find 17" wheels with decent offsets/widths for less than the cost of a cert + spacers (~$400-$500)

What the hell.

Just put slip on spacers on.

Go to local mechanic for wofs.

If he complains take them off.

You forgot the "cancel your insurance as it will be void if you stack it and they find them."

besides which, they can only decline claims if the problem with your car was a direct contributer to the accident.

'i dunno, i guess they were on the car when i bought it?'

Is this true?
Because i got my insurance cancelled because it had aftermarket suspension that they apparently didn't know about. This was after an accident where someone backed into my parked car.

Your car doesn't have to be the cause of the accident. The part of the car that has been modified without their knowledge doesn't even have to contribute to the accident. You can have an exhaust that they don't know about and they'll decline the claim as the car is modified beyond their knowledge. Had it happen to me before when someone cut me off and I hit the curb trying to avoid crashing into them..I had a manual conversion done to the car so my insurance was voided. I daresay that suspension/brakes are always a contributor to an accident anyway regardless of who's at fault.
