Newb question about ignition timing

Postby gasman » Sat Jan 08, 2011 4:08 pm

how does one go about checking ignition timing with a timing light on a coil on plug type engine since there is no HT lead?

Just making this up, but if you had an old plug lead and cut it
short, you could fit it between the COP and the plug ??

Put the inductive clamp from your timing light around the trigger wire to the #1 coil. Good timing lights can pick up the low voltage trigger pulses. If not some timing lights can pick up the signal from the coil itself by just having the inductive clamp on the coil somehow.

Not sure what car you have but nissans have a loop of wire specifically for hooking an inductive clamp up to.i think it's near the ignitor. Otherwise just try one of the other suggestions
