Hi mate, are you talking about organised events, or track/fun days?

he is talking about any event that runs under a MSNZ permit

some private track day/fun days will prevent you from taking passengers, soley depends on the person who is running the day and their agreement with the track management company in question

Needs to be a full cage though to take passengers at those events with MSNZ permit... Right?

yup, I can't take passengers in my mx5 at MSNZ events as it only has a half cage.

Correct.

Half cage is virtually useless at msnz permitted events unless you are running a convertible like cogent. Also a half cage doesnt allow you to enter events (like shelly bay or kaihinau rd for example) whos regs state homologated roll protection is mandatory for all competing vehicles

I would love a full cage but my head almost hits the roof when I have a helmet on already, so adding 3" to 4" of wrapped roll cage in that area would make my very uncomfortable to drive.

Maybe I can remove my sliders and just have the seat bolted in 1 position to remove an inch or so more height.

I agree with safety and all the rest of it but to be fair I have been ripping around tracks with passengers in my car safely for a fairly long time and they even get out and say I'm not driving quick enough until they have at
look at the actual lap time.

I'm pretty confident I can go round Manfield safely with a passenger sub 1.18 anyone keen...hahahaha..

What track days have you been able to carry passengers at please mate?

I would love to be able to take my Dad, Uncle, Girlfriend, close friends etc for a hot lap or two one day. Would be really nice if I didnt have to install a cage to do it though.

P.S Enjoy the gtr track day this weekend too mate :)

Mr Ree, have you seen the results of a roll over of a car with no cage? Sure it's not common, but I don't like ya chances of both coming out unhurt. A car with a cage on the other hand protects anyone in it.

You don't normally have bars above your head as far as I know, so I don't think your clearance would be affected. Just whip out the roof lining for extra room while you're at it

Dont get me wrong mate, I a BIG advocate for safety in everything I do but I recognise the difference between a road car that gets entered in the odd track fun day, and a full blown race car.

Sure accidents happen, thats why they are called accidents but I just cant justify turning what is essentially a road car into a full blown race car and all the other certification and paperwork that goes with it. But I can make sure that my car is prepared as safely as possible before hitting the track and do everything in my power whilst on the track to minimise the risks to myself and anyone else who is out there with me by driving well within my cars and my own personal limits.

Regarding the cage positioning, there is absolutely no room with my current seating position (which I think is about as low as I can go) as Im virtually touching the roof when I perform head checks. The roof tapers down on the sides quite alot so once a bar with padding is added, it will be pushing into where my head would normally reside.

Im considering removing 2 inches of shin bone next week to remedy this problem ;)

There it is mate you've just answered your own question at the end of the day I think you've just summised why i have'nt gone down the caged route either with the above reply.I could'nt have put it any better....

For me thats why I chose a cheap chassis as a base for a track car (ae92 Trueno) and will put a cage into it this year.

I've had some close calls on the track, but then again that was due to running out of brakes which can be fixed and the other was because it was more of a swimming pool than a race track.

I think the risk is higher than you might think, all that needs to happen is going off the track at a decent speed and the car slides at an angle then the outside tyres dig into the dirt/grass/sand. Result: you're on the roof. Even worse it rolls multiple times and the roof collapses.

And it doesn't need to be because you were driving beyond your own or the cars limits, it could simply be because the car infront loses it and you are forced to leave the track to avoid them. Or someone else had an off, came back on the track half a lap earlier and left dirt on the track surface. All things out of your control.

A half cage is better than nothing though.

There is always going to be a risk of things going wrong, on the track, or the road.

Just be defensive in every decision you make and you will hopefully be ok ;)

Maybe once money is flowing a bit more freely, I will look into getting a cage and everything that goes with it, but at the moment I dont anywhere near the budget to start undertaking entering MSNZ events so it will just be fun days for me for the forseeable future.

After years of riding motorbikes, I always drive with the attitude that everyone out there is a possible accident waiting to happen so I dont go following other cars up their arses on the track as its not going to benefit me, only cost me if as you say, something goes wrong with their car.

I have more than enough brakes and enough grip to make sure Im not going to be putting myself in any sticky situations either, given they are only fun days, thats how I treat them. Im no Schuey hehe, just someone who wants to enjoy his toy legally :)

Whatever form of legal motorsport you want to participate in is all good.

I do feel the need to point out though that you've got your pricing backwards though.

The Road and Track sprint series has entry fees 1/2 to 1/3 of the typical prices I have seen for the advertised fun days ...

Autcross entry fees for the series I'm running is $30/round.

Sorry I should have said that the cost of competing at a serious level costs far more than I have to spend at the moment.

If I started entering event like the road and track series, I would need far more cash as I would firstly need a rollcage and harnesses, different drivers seat as my racetechs are the low sided design. I would also be going through far more tyres/ brakes/consumables/petrol/accomodation etc.

I didnt mean the actual entry cost of the event, as I think we would all agree that its typically the smallest cost of the weekend.

What autocross series are you entering btw mate?

pfffffff, who wants *serious* motorsport ... I'm in it for the giggles.

Road and Track series you can run a stock standard road car .... don't need any of that other stuff (unless you have a convertible).

Photoworks Autocross Challenge is being run by myself Distrb and Chelles and Guru all from this forum (and Harbour Capital).

http://www.hccc.org.nz/webpage/29

Hmmmm. Have to remind Guru to update our website with this year's events. First is this Sunday and is a coaching / practice day.

I didnt realise stock cars could enter road and track series, I might have to look into that then as circuit racing is my preference and 1 lap attack is pretty safe compared to being surrounded by a dozen other cars going for gold.

Even still though, the extra cost of entering events regularly, rather than as the wallet allows is a major concern for me at the moment. Once things improve financially I probably wont be so concerned about dollars and cents as I am now, I would just hate to over commit to a series and not be able to afford to see it through.

And "serious" was probably the wrong choice of word. I just mean that once you take it past fun days, it is kind of serious as you are out there to try and win which dictates than you will be driving harder, faster, and for longer.

Thanks alot for the link Leon, I will pop over and have a look now :)

Racing is a massive pit of money that never ends.

The only thing that varies is the size of the pit :)

I can fully relate with the money thing, having a mortgage makes for a tight budget (thus I race a very close to standard Corolla that has been off the road for coming up on six months now being straightened again).

You can do a fair bit of playing without burning huge piles of money. Always depends how fast you want to go.
