d2 coilovers - good or bad?

No, I think its more of a case of be realistic with your expectations from what you buy. I mean how many sets will be running perfectly fine on the street, probably lots.

Spend 1k on a set of coilovers and expect 1k worth of quality.
Spend 5k and get 5k worth etc

Not sure much is designed to be driven over ripple strips and come off well

i dont know anything about the new black ones though

only reason im even lookin at d2's is theres a set on tardme for $450

Each to their own I guess. My D2's have been in the car for ~5-6 years now and I've never had a problem with them. In that time they've done a couple years of daily driving and weekend track days, attempts at drift days that more often than not resulted in my spinning out and going backwards over ripple strips or doing jumps in the infield - backwards. Even after sitting for 2 and a bit years there are no leaks and they're just as the day they were installed. If they broke tomorrow I think I'd still gladly say I got my money's worth out of them and they've fulfilled the job I wanted them to do and then some.

Every time someone asks about D2's those pictures of the S14 get thrown around and the general response is "D2's are crap because this guy broke a pair". Be realistic though, if you go driving on ripple strips you're bound to break something. D2's aren't the only sets of suspension that don't react to that kind of shock well. Ultimately, any coilover treated in that way will eventually fail - they're just not designed for it. Expensive suspension is not a substitute for showing care. Even the big brands bend if treated wrong.

For ~$1500 brand new I think D2's are good value for money. If you want entry level adjustable suspension, they'll do the job just fine. The spring rates they come with are usually overly stiff for street use but you can choose different spring rates at no extra charge when you buy them so just pick something sensible.

Plus the damper adjusting on my D2s was crap, they didn't click or anything to give you any indication that you had changed the settings so it was very hard to set all 4 corners the same

those TEINs looks pretty old school! of course anything is going to bend with a shaft that small. all the TEIN's i have seen (including mine) have a much much larger shock than any other type of coilover.

for $450 - yeah maybe if its better than nothing...
fir $1399 (as advertised) HELL NO!

BC's aren't that much more and neither are a near new set of TEIN or the like. could do a decent Koni setup with springs too which would be superior in performance.

You notice the ride difference when adjusting the dampers on BC's! I can't stand mine with anything other than fully soft (well maybe up to 7/30 possible clicks) in my Corolla. Tried them at around half way (which BC recommend for "sports driving") and they car was waaay to stiff / bumpy / sketchy doing 90km/h over a piece of road that can be done comfortably at a speed much much quicker than that.

Funny that. Turns out if you use a product in a situation it's not designed for, it's likely to fail. Who'd have thought. Manfeild's ripple strips are huge - not a pleasant experience being on them.

My Koni's have seen Pukes/Taupos/Manfields/Chch/Timarus rippled strips ALOT, and no damage in 5 years.
So for a set of D2's to do that seems to scream out crap to me.. I'd go BC over D2.

Curbs will bend anything.......

Not really, took out a curb side on so hard that the mag wheel had a chunk missing and the wheel bearing is knackered, the teins I have are still sweet (measured).

But then they do carry a $2.5k+ pricetag if brand new, compared to $1399 or whatever for D2.

In what vehicle? shocks in a double wishbone type set up get less punishment on impacts than mcphersons do.

they are really hard when you wind them damper up but you definitely feel the difference when adjusted

Either go for BC which is easily obtainable in NZ or ISC.

These are prob the only coilovers I would use that are made in Taiwan as I know their quality control is good and they have a very good customer base in the motorsport scene.

MR2, rears, they're a mcpherson setup afaik.
