so to sum it up simply, has anyone actually used these new d2's?

are they as shit as the old purple ones were known to be? are they worth $400

theres been heaps of topics that always end in suggesting to buy bilstein/koni shocks and spring combo, wasnt askign for that

for $400 you're not going to get anything suspension wise. probably not even a set of standard struts.

but tbh if you only spend $400 and don't have high expectations how can you possibly be dissapointed since it is SFA moolaa

If by old purple ones you mean these

Then

iOnic wrote:My D2's have been in the car for ~5-6 years now and I've never had a problem with them. In that time they've done a couple years of daily driving and weekend track days, attempts at drift days that more often than not resulted in my spinning out and going backwards over ripple strips or doing jumps in the infield - backwards. Even after sitting for 2 and a bit years there are no leaks and they're just as the day they were installed. If they broke tomorrow I think I'd still gladly say I got my money's worth out of them and they've fulfilled the job I wanted them to do and then some.

If you can get them for $400 then that's good a score (assuming they're in good condition). I hear the new generation are even better so I wouldn't hesitate to get a set if I was in the market. Picture above is of mine after being in the car for 4 years. Pulled them out to clean the mud/crap off them.

If you've got more money to spend then there are better sets of suspension you can get but on a budget D2 seem to do a good enough job under normal conditions.

Sorry about this but not a huge fan of D2 coilovers much like there D2 wanna be AP brakes.I'd prefer the TRD Bilsteins over anything D2 have in there range they are firmly valved and sprung probably not really ideal for street but at Manfield Taupo and alike they are great.

P.S I've been over those ripples at Manfield alot but I think my Bilsteins hang and would bend or break like those D2's did.

The real question is why are you looking to buy coilovers?

If you don't care how your car handles and just want to be low buy what ever brand you want

If you want your car to handle better, go and speak with a suspension expert and listen to there advise, jsut becasue you are low doesnt mean you car is handleing any better

i think what OP is getting at is it doesn't have to be the best suspension setup out there. but for the money, there is no better solution really. nothing has been stated about track time or anything or else i'm sure this thread would have gone a completely different way.

$400 is even the price of a decent set of lowering springs so to get a whole coilover package that will handle better than std shocks + lowering spring when lowered because it retains the full stroke of the shock.

if you don't have high expectations and only spend $400 then it doesn't really matter what the 'best' solution is.

And one of the points being made is some cheap coilovers will NOT always be be an improvement.

yes i'm sure that could of been said for the 1st gen D2's but from feedback the newer ones don't seem as bad.

it all depends on how you look at the 'benefit' of having adjustable coilovers. with a ae101 h8wrx isn't going to get it lowered very much using lowering springs so coilovers are the next cheapest and most accessible option. this would be seen as a major benefit cause it is a nice looking car with money spent on the exterior, so lowering the car would suit it quite well.

nothing has been said about it having to handle fantastic ont he track or anything and from what has been said it seems like the newer D2's stand up to road use alright. (as long as you stay away from curbs that is  )

It stands for any brand if not suited to what the car is really being used for

You can't lower an AE101 much more than most good springs anyway. Not with out making it PITA and too low.

But yeah... would be good to hear from some users of the NEW D2's

If that is 3% worth of work.....then holy shit you have been busy over the years  3% = 64 jobs on the list = ~2100 jobs in total for the 100% Considering sorting the wiring for the mirrors is just one job :x

No decision on the motivation for today?

Is hard parking when you try to drift your car into the curb as hard as possible? Sounds about as useful

Might have to revise percentage, didnt quite realise how much was left until I wrote the list  but 2100 jobs sounds about right :?
Dot is beside motivation ;) well done for being able to read my writing!

i didnt end up buying the set on trademe,

mainly due to not wanting second hand suspension in unknown condition

although i will add the stock suspension in my ae101 is f**ked so anything would be an upgrade

i did buy a brand new set of STD Suspension through bazda, so ill hav to wait and see how they go
