2E Tempreture Gauge Problem

Postby Babz » Sun Mar 20, 2011 1:10 pm

Hey Guys. We just Completed a transplant of a 2e turbo into my mates ee100 corolla. Car Runs perfectly but now the Water Temp Gauge is shooting straight to hot as soon as the ignition is turned on. Used to work before. We have put in new sender unit and tried both the old 2e carb sensor and new turbo sensor but still the same. When it is unplugged the temp drops back down. Would anyone know what else i could try?

You've got the oil sensor and water temp sensor wires around the wrong way.

Damn that was what i was going to try tomorrow. Lol. Thanks Stu. The only problem is i am still using the original Wiring loom from the old motor for the the gauges and ignition. So i am guessing that only one wire would be linked to the water temp gauge.

Yes thats the right way to do it. The water temp and oil temp are both one wire so just swap them over and your away. Still ct12 turbo?

Yeap still CT12. Will upgrade when this blows. Running 0.8 bar at the mo. The wire that is connected to the Water Temp at the moment is what triggers the gauge , meaning when i pull the wire out of the Temp gauges drops off to dead cold. When i short the wire to ground the gauge shoots to the top (hot) . i will have another look tomorrow if i go over to my mates.

Yes the dash guage sensor switches to earth ie lack of earth = cold, full earth = hot.

Didnt make it to my mates. But the wire that is connected to the Water Sensor is what triggers the Water Temp Gauge, meaning wouldnt that be the right wire is in the right sensor?

Ah yep could be then. Right sensor? The one facing the firewall is for the fan just in case you have them around the wrong way?

Yeap Fan one is connected. Its the one facing the Left Chassis that i have connected the gauge wire to. The smallest sensor out of all of them.

Should be the one, only thing I can think of is that its not a linear sensor and is only on/off? Got a spare to try? Use the one off the original engine.

So if you earth the wire to the chassis for example the temp guage should go all the way to hot? This would indicate that the wiring/guage is fine. Got plenty of good earth straps the the engine?

Yea plenty if earth. The guy at Taylors Auto Electrical reckons it could be the gauge as well. Apparently they have some kind of winding in them and if that burns out , it can not tell the difference between voltages and would read high or low and nothing in the middle. Worth a try getting another Cluster but i do not think it is going to work.

did it work before the conversion? i had a similar problem when i first swapped in a blacktop in place of a 4af, what it was was the ground from the gauge cluster not being connected to the ground wires going to the engine block.

Yeap it did work. Means there should be loose wire some where that needs to be grounded. Thanks man, il try that out.

Tried looking for that wire with no luck. Might have to pay and call in the professionals.
