brought a large trans cooler yesterday, and will hopefully be fitting it this weekend,
might do a bit of a photo sesson while i am at it
currently I am erring on the side of bypassing the factory cooler in the radiator totally, and maybe even looking at getting a manual radiator installed or an aftermarket alloy one in the future

trans cooler in in, plumbed in series with factory cooler as recommended on the instruction booklet

also gave the surf an engine flush and oil change, and tightened the belts as they were a bit on the loose side

towing to Masterton today with a Valliant drag tank on the trailer, and 4 of us plus gear in the back, its still getting warm going up long hills...

next step ali radiator? or maybe look at replacing the viscous fan?

Sounds like its towing a fair load so maybe its just pushing it a bit hard?

I have no idea tbh, but would an oil cooler help things? Other than that I think you need a small truck as I doubt a surf is designed with that much of a beating in mind

it should already have an alloy radiator. if it has a brass one that could be the issue.

getting the radiator 'serviced' is most likely going to cost as much as a replacement one

i have read up on some aussie forums and its looking like the viscous fan is getting buggered and not cooling efficiently. unfortunately this is an expensive fix, but sounds like its problem solved when a new one is fitted

Look at the tops of the core tubes, the 6-10 that are visible gives a good indication of all the others. If more then a few, 2-3, are clogged or have a heavy mineral buildup that'll restrict flow, then it needs cleaning.
The fan is useless & does nothing for engine cooling, except restrict airflow, at any speed over 25kph so that isn't your problem unless it's overheating when sitting still.
Is all the airflow going through the radiator, without any big gaps or panels removed that allow it to bypass the radiator?

We have had one off a 1KZTE surf sent away and re-viscoused ??? lol
They pulled it apart and replaces the fluid or whatever in it.

When dead cold and you start the engine it should be noisy(fan blade noise) for a few seconds before they go quiet.

So long as it's always had antifreeze in it, the cooling system won't be clogged. They only get clogged after a leak and the owner tops it up with water , that causes corrosion in the cooling system then clogging. If it needs topping up then it's got a leak, either internal or external.
No, the fan does nothing when it's moving.
My turbo diesel hilux has only ever got hot once, that was towing a car up the wainui hill with a tailwind. No it doesn't have a working fan.
Towing 600Kgs isn't a lot. A car trailer and car comes in at about 2200Kgs which I've done a return trip to Taupo with (towing with hilux) and no overheating and no fan.

You can buy the fluid from Toyota in a small bottle.
