vibration/wobble in my corolla.

Postby 123456789 » Tue May 03, 2011 10:53 am

Hi all,
I have done a fair amount of searching but have not found my same problem.

Basicly the car vibrates, more from the seat than the steering wheel and only after about 100 km/h. however it stops when you accelerate or put something heavy in the back.

I was thinking it was something like a bushing, but either im not testing it right or they are fine.

The car is a 1986 corolla liftback with 4age engine, FXGT Disc brakes all round, FXGT hubs and FXGT suspention.

Let me know if you need any more information.

Thanks
Chris

My tyres are getting a tad bald but i swapped front with rear and nothing changed, the vibration didn't move to the steeringwheel etc

Most likely something coming from the rear of the car if you're feeling it through your seat.

Checked rear wheel balance lately?

would that not move it to the steering wheel, if it was anything to do with the wheels?

I have been told that not having the correct center wheel rings (if you run aftermarket wheels) can possible contribute to a balance issue even if the actual wheels have been balanced correctly.

i will need to look into that one. might do it tomorow. Anything other ideas while im at it? as for the wheels, iv had 2 sets of different wheels on it and both give the same feedback. so i think it is something mechanical somewhere

my front engine mount was looking a little sad, so i replaced that. had a slight improvement but not a huge amount. had a look at bushings when it was on the hoist for the wof but didnt tug on them at all. will check them tomorow aswell.

How do you know it's from the rear?

because there isn't much feedback from the steering wheel. the most comes from the seat. if that means it could still be from the front, i stand corrected and apologize

Coming through the wheel would indicate it's in the front steering/suspension.
So it's safe to say it won't be front wheels or suspension.
If it was engine mounts etc then you'd feel it though the seat.

ok, so it couldnt be any suspension compents or hubs in the rear? also what is the best way to test engine mounts? i have replaced one (the front one) but didnt make much of a difference (it was 2nd hand and may also be f*#%ed)

Yes it can be suspension in the rear.
Wont't be in the front because they are linked to the steering and you'd feel it through the wheel.

First thing is a visual look and see if they are broken.
I don't think mounts are all that likely if it goes away under acceleration.
however if this is a recent conversion or just had something modded in that area it could be.

The conversion itself isnt new, but the last motor overheated so this engine is resonably new. as for the visual, that is how i determined the last to be worn (cracks in the rubber) but there isnt a way of using the engine to torque them or something and if they do something they stuffed? (just going of the idea of testing shocks, with there rebound setle)

also keep in mind that it went completely away, 100% prob solved while i had a big co2 bottle in the boot/over backseat. but im not that keen on driving it everyday with that in the boot.... :?
