Blue HID Look Bulbs - Opinions Please :)

Hi guys,
I have been thinking about importing some hid blue/white look bulbs. They have a colour temperature of 8500k so give off a white / blue tinted light. I had these in my car ages ago but cant find them on the market anymore and all the other 'blue look' bulbs ive bought are just yellow crap. Below are some pictures of when they were in my chaser. Please guys let me know a couple things; is there a market? at what price? and also whether a 7500k white temperature would be better on the market, basically 8500k but without the blue tint. If i was to bring these in they would probably be selling at around $30, what do you guys think?

I know i would be keen on some of the white ones, to go with the LED park lights in my ae101 trueno. I am sick of the yellow looking bulbs at the moment and that price seems reasonable.

basically from what we get told by the manufacturers , the whiter globes , are usually not as good to drive with at night ..

they dont push the light as far down the road for visibility but are better for initial light in front of the car ..

I use Phillips +80's across the front if the celica at, which are also ADR compliant , as are the narva blue powers which have a more " white " appearance .

Depending on the cost , i guess give them a try but i can pretty much bet that anythig of that rating wont be legal

What are the wattage ratings of the bulbs? The last set of "white" bulbs I ran have very poor long distance light performance, despite being 100/90W bulbs. Were absolutely no comparison to Narva Plus 50's in terms of visibility. Just a note as well, anything over 70 watts is technically illegal for road use so be careful when selling if they are rated higher than that.

I think there would be a market, especially on trademe. If they actually look like pics id be keen.

The blue tinge bulbs work by cutting off most of the light and letting blue through, so they're not bright at all.

I used to have GP Thunder 8500k's, they look cool and all but as soon as one of them blew up i swapped them for a pair of normal bulbs, much better.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

You had a look on trademe? Their are HID 'style/type/whatever' bulbs all over the show.

Both white led park light bulbs and white/blue (8500k gp thunders) bulbs will ofter be failed come warrant time.

Ive been failed on both on more than one occasion.

And if you ever drive in the country at night anything 6000k + is pretty much useless.

So if your looking into this seriously it might be worth investigation the legality of them.

Not really, last time i was in the market for white bulbs was 2007. Back then i remember paying 50 dollers for something claimed to be white/blue and turned out yellow. My cars after that have been newer so i just got a HID kit - their cheap enough these days.
Was thinking the trademe ones would be yellow as well?

Specific viewing angles would be the only real reason. Some of the cheap ones are quite directional

Thought those kits were illegal?

Note 8 A high-intensity discharge (HID or Xenon HID) conversion kit consists of an HID bulb with a high voltage power output
or ‘ballast’ which fits into the original headlamp unit in place of the original bulb with no change to the headlamp lens,
reflector or housing. It is illegal to fit an HID conversion kit to a vehicle as it brings the headlamp out of standards
compliance by producing poor beam patterns and light that is far too bright to be safe. The bulbs can also produce light
that is noticeably blue and not the required substantially white or amber colour. Vehicle and headlamp manufacturers do
not permit this modification, and these kits cannot be LVV certified. It is permitted to replace a complete halogen headlamp
unit with a complete HID headlamp unit.


I hope you replaced the whole headlight units then and not some trademe wannabe HID kit :lol:

What do they mean by headlamp unit? Headlights itself?

I think that applies to cars with headlights that can't handle it. I converted late model bmw's and never had issues.
My evo 6 ( they dont come with Hid's factory) came with hids from japan..passed cert and oviously compliance (vtnz wof). I am pretty sure wof inspectors look at beam pattern, not the fact it has HID's.

Saying that, i did fail for white park lights for a AA compliance on my evo 4, so don't use those anymore... prefer the parklight in the indicator anyway :lol:

The beam pattern is totally different between HID and normal lights, so unless the complete housing is replaced then you end up with messed up lights (and they aren't legal). Your Evo 6 probably had aftermarket housings.

I used some blue tint bulbs, $12 each from memory.
Round town driving so brightness not a biggie

HID conversions without swapping the entire headlight unit is an illegal fitment to a vehicle. They have different reflectors inside the the headlight so they throw a terrible pattern. Even if the pattern is half decent they're still illegal unless they have the right reflector

They are horrible from performance point of view.
I would not care if it would affect only you, the problem is that it affect everyone else: they create too much glare for oncoming traffic, they also create too much glare and too little light for yourself, so do every one a favour and install unhindered light bulbs.

They were white led bulbs and the inspector decide they are blue. The comments said park lights and headlight bulbs must be white or amber not blue.

Correct, the only people allowed blue lights anywhere on the car are the police.

I agree, someone had 8000k+ in a old celica...even though it was behind me it pissed the F**** out of me. Since then i do not support putting HIDs in older cars. Yeah that would explain my evo 6...beam pattern was normal and never glared etc.

curosity.. I got failed for pure white led parklights..inspector said it had to be yellow... does that mean Headlights cannot be pure white either?
