Bonnet wont open

Hi, Ive had this problem on a couple of older toyotas, when you pull the lever inside the car to open the bonnet it doesnt click up like it should, the only way to open it is to hold the lever and have someone else pull the bonnet up.. annoying
Im sure other people have this problem too, I've tried putting crc in the mechanism, and ive checked that the cable is pulling all the way back but it still dosent help..

Hold leaver out, smack back corner of bonnet while holding leaver, profit.

wedge a pry bar under the bonnet, pull lever. the weight of the bar will pop the bonnet open for you

Try adjusting the location of the latch behind the grill.

who didnt make a sensible suggestion? we've all given you a way to open to bonnet by yourself, and best of all, none of them cost any money!

Have you tried adjusting it. All bonnet catches I have seen have some form of adjustment. Either the mounting plate can be moved or the spring on the catch can be wound in/out/replaced with old valve spring

Or sometimes have rubber stops mounted on the car to hold the bonnet away, and these can usually be wound out. Sometimes winding these out will push the bonnet up enough for the catch to work properly (if that made any sense at all :lol:

Yeah adjust the rubber stops to preload the bonnet catch. Sometimes you can add washers to make them taller.

remove bonnet catch completely, install bonnet pins, wear flat-peak cap sideways, talk like 50 cent.

i have no catch and pins?

(radiator in the way now)

dont have flat peak with shiny sticker or 50 cent accent though/

had a couple of cars do this. Basically hosed the shit out of the catch with CRC. used a screw driver to "close" the bonnet a few times, made sure it was well lubricated. Bonnet worked fine since.

Fitting of hood pins is legal.
Removing the catch may be considered part of Frontal impact component which means it has to stay

Unsure about these 2: wear flat-peak cap sideways, talk like 50 cent.

Yeah nothing illegal about fitting bonnet pins. Just need to retain the secondary catch (lever you pull up when you go to lift your bonnet) so that the bonnet doesn't fly open in the unlikely event that the pins fail - I don't think that's a legal requirement, more a common sense thing. Fitted bonnet pins and removed factory catches on more cars than I can remember and never had a problem at Cert/WOF time.

*half serious question* Regarding the "Secondary catch" would the second bonnet pin on the other corner of the bonnet count?
