FT-86 to be called Celica

Postby Flannelman » Mon Jun 27, 2011 7:19 pm

Fitting name to a small rear wheel drive. Just like the original of the 70s.

Saw it in last weeks paper.

Wonder if Toyota still make 2Js... Id say to put a 4age in it but cosworth took back ownership of the tooling couple of months ago.

Hopefully it isn't anything like Celicas of more recent times...

Erm, knowing nothing about the history of the 4AGE, do you have any more information or links about this? Do you mean that Cosworth always owned the rights/tooling for these engines?

4AGE started out as a pretty close copy of Cosworth's Belt Driven A series (BDA) so it wouldn't surprise me. The two engines are identical in many ways (but they are different in many others)

You can say that about most of the engines.

Contrary to a false assumption that the 4A-G is a copy of the Cosworth BDA, (coincidental ‘A’ series designation on both engines). There are little, if any, interchangeable parts between the two engines, outside of maybe some nuts and bolts.

I looked over it in person in Paris last year, don't think it had an engine at the time though. Security Guard was keeping a close look lol

95% production-ready concept:

Most recent test car (seen testing at the NBR), even newer than the FT86II concept:

Looks like they've moved the LED driving lights into the headlights, changed the taillights, but there hasn't been much else changed...
Cheers,
Brandon

i reckon they should've developed the scion FR-S concept over the FT86-II.

looks so much more awesome.
why would toyota call the 86 reincarnation a celica? they've registered '86' too. I'm guessing they'd go for FR-S or 86.

anyone interested in the FT86 should really check out the updates on the FT86club

Because people that buy new cars don't care about an overhyped 80's budget car.

99% of buyers don't know what an AE86 is and really the AE86 was the end of that family tree. The Celica family is fairly continuous (save the last few years) so is more recognisable (and respected).

That would be the best looking Celica ever!

Flannelman, wtf are you on about? Cosworth taking back the tooling?
Where did you hear that from?
While there maybe some samness in some angles etc there is bugger all else the same between the 4AGE and BDA.

celica for girls.... pshhhhhh. I'd own an ra28 GT in a heartbeat.
when they stopped making rwd's and 4wd turbo's.. thats when it went downhill fo sure

lol who said anything about 'corolla'. its pretty clear it is a concept born out of the popularity of the ae86. front engine, rwd, lightweight, good hangling etc. but it's definately a unique car from any other toyota line considering it's sitting on a shortened imprezza chassis. show us any official information saying anything about it being a 'Celica'? have you not followed all the press releases and autoshow appearances...
FT86 - 'Future Toyota 86' speaks for itself does it not?
