I'd happily give up a bit of privacy if it means the likes of stolen cars are found etc. what information are you upset they will be able to gain?

At this stage not much, but once they have these cameras hanging off every other motorway overbridge and major intersection (give it 10years) and they start using them for average speed tickets, and more insidiously, logging your movements for the last three years, they will be abused by corrupt/incompetent cops.

I dont have a problem with them if no data is recorded about where/when your plate was seen and checked if it came back clean, but given the history of governments around the world, they will start out saying they won't record it, then one day in the future they will quietly pass a bill in parliament which enables the recording of data, and from there it only goes downhill.

Sort of like they did with IRD numbers, they were entirely voluntary at first, then a few years later they made them compulsory.

Eventually this information will become invaluable to some people, and corrupt cops/non-sworn police staff will be selling access to the data.

Debt collectors, Investigators, journalists, stalkers, etc. Got a dispute with somebody? better hope they don't have a mate who is a cop, or a good hacker.

As for catching crims, how long do you its going to take the crims to realise that sticking a pair of clean plates over the ones on the stolen car mean these cameras wont catch you? Or just pulling the plates altogether. At least with a real cop checking your rego he's going to (maybe) notice that the plates dont match the rego sticker, or the rego sticker/plates for a red toyota corolla is on a white 200sx.

Always laugh when people come up with convoluted "big brother is watching" type scenarios, and then:

All of which are voluntary, and totally in my control, easy enough to pull the battery or pay cash if you want.

Wait till you've had scumbag register a car you've never seen in your name, (stolen wallet) and change the address your licence is linked too to an imaginary address, then use the vehicle that they've just registered in your name to commit burglaries and then you might realise why I don't like the idea.

You can get a WOF done up to two weeks before it expires and it post-dated to the date it expires, I have no idea why people wait till its just going to expire other than forgetting about it or lazyness/not knowing this is possible.

yeah this... that is if the wof inspector or the one entering data on the landata knows what they are doing. some wof inspectors are just lazy to put the correct expiry on the system.

From what I remember in the older system the expiry date was automatically calculated, and the usual complaint was the WOF guy put a 6 month WOF on cars still eligible for a 1 year WOF cos he just added 6 months to the current date instead of checking the screen.

Yeah. Also it seems now that if it fails, it's failed. Therefore old WOF is invalid.
Which makes sense as at any time your car is not up to WOF standard you can be fined.

Well i understand the meaning behind it, but damn that makes it difficult to get repairs done - if you get a $1000 bill for repairs up to wof standard that you have to get done immediately because you can't drive it until it passes... defeats the purpose of going for a wof early.

Yes. However having a current dated wof displayed will prevent you getting pinged at random stops and by parking wardens.
But the letter of the law, it's your responsibility to keep it at WOF standard at all times.
