aw11 2zzge conversion not hitting lift

Postby Psych0-hAmst3r » Mon Jul 04, 2011 11:27 pm

Hey all.

Ive recently swapped a 2zzge into my aw11 and I thought I had it all sussed. Everything appears to be working perfectly except that the motor does not come onto the high cam. Even so it feels awesome to drive, so much more torque than the blacktop had.

I'm running a fully stock 2zzge from my donor car (celica 2000) so factory motor and ECU. The intake manifold and throttle body are factory but the intake pipe is new, fully custom exhaust including headers. Oxy has been placed inside the final collector.

I have all of the sensors plugged in (Im pretty sure, will check again tomorrow), today I connected the celicas dash into the boot as I found somewhere on the internet saying that the speedo needed to be connected for the motor to hit lift, something about the ECU doesn't allow lift when in neutral and checks the cars not in neutral as the speedo is reading a speed. Originally I had my aw11's mechanical speedo cable connected but that meant the ECU didn't have a speed signal.

I have checked the water temp sensor is plugged in. ECU doesn't allow Lift when the motor is cold. My water tempt sensor is hooked up so I know the motor is warm enough.

I have opened the Oil Control Valve to clean the small oil filter in there. The OCV has a solenoid which opens an oil passage to lock the rockers onto the high cam.

I'm thinking a good step would be to figure out if its the ECU not telling the motor to hit lift or if the motor isn't hitting lift when it should be, would narrow it down to electrical or oil pressure. Unfortunately to do this I need to run the car up to 6000rpm and somehow see if the OCV solenoid is firing, not sure how to do this yet.

Running out of ideas and don't know where I should take the car for insight/help.

Tried the paperclip in the diagnostic port trick?

It will tell you if the ECU is getting the speed signal, for starters.

I replaced the lift bolts before I even ran the motor. I'm getting to the point of opening the head back up to have another look at them.

I have not done the paperclip in the diagnostic port thing. I'm assuming you put it onto the OBD2 port? I have not actually wired this plug up yet because it runs through the celica dash which I was really hoping I would not have to run. Shouldn't take long to hook up though.

Yea its an awesome motor, I cant wait to get it ripping the power properly, its the perfect motor for a little aw11. Removes some of the weight from its rear end and gives it a much needed spike in power.

Really sounds like you need to work out a way to check the fault codes.

Once you are happy there are no error codes, chuck a test light on the lift solenoid wire to see if it is being triggered at all (the ECU triggers earth, so the test light should be between 12V and Lift pin).

One thing I forgot to mention. I have the engine check light hooked up. It turns on when the key is at AM2 and turns off when the motor is running, just like you'd expect from a motor running properly. This should always light up if there is an error code correct? Or can you have an error code but not have the engine check light turning on.

I'm not all that familiar with OBDII but OBDI can store codes but not show a light.
Also some codes are only shown while the fault is happening

is there anybody on here who is in Christchurch who has an OBD2 reader? I'm just hooking up the plug but that's only half the challenge aint it :p

EDIT:
I've just noticed that 2 of the wires on the OBD2 plug go to the multiplex which is the in-car computer for the airbags, lights, heaters etc etc, all the stuff I'm not using hence not using the multiplex. Looking on the internet these wires are for the signal protocol. Now does this mean the multiplex actually relays all of the information to the ODB2 reader and I will need the multiplex to use the OBD2 plug?

I know its getting quite technical and specific but I'm not sure who to ask about this stuff, toyota shop normally tells me to just go away lol

you could manually turn on the lift ocv to test if lift is working. bring the revs to around 2500 then fire the ocv, the engine should drop revs and stall. be aware that doing this could produce a CEL and you might need a diagnostics scan to clear.

that's a clever idea. I'm a little cautious about the whole thing though incase the ECM needs clearing, Im not completely sure that the diagnostics tool will talk to the ECM properly yet.

I have put a 12V battery onto the OCV when not running and it did fire perfectly fine.

I tested the speedo this afternoon. I hooked up the backlight on the celica dash and then taped my cellphone to the inside of the boot, turns out that the speedo is NOT working yet. Pretty stumped as to whats not hooked up correctly though, will have another look at it tomorrow.
Thinking just trying to check if the ECU is getting a speedo signal, if the dial is working is actually pretty pointless, its in the boot!

where is the ecu getting its speed signal from?

its suposed to be getting it from the dash cluster. The speedo sensor in the transmission is connected directly to the dash cluster and that sends a speed signal to the ECU. I'm not really sure what sort of signal the speedo should be putting into the ECO so I will try and run a cable off of it into the car and hold the multimeter on it while driving, see if it gives me something.

yup its sender-->dash-->ecu. sender output is a series of pulse sort of a square wave. i reckon theres a conditioning circuit/ wave shaper inside the dash that outputs a "cleaner" signal to the ecu. try wiring it that way and see what happens. also wire up the diagnostics port so you can get data from it using a diagnostics tool.

I mostly wired up the diagnostics port today but I've hit a snag.

There are 7 wires on the OBD2 Port.

2 go into the ECU
1 is the power earth
1 is the signal earth
1 is Power from the OBD fuse (I have just used a spare 7.5A fuse)
2 Go to the MPX

The MPX is the multiplex communications box in the car which I am not running, I can always hook it up for the sake of the OBD2 port but I bet its gonna take a long time as it runs yet another fuse box and probably has a dozen different power inputs needed.

Looking at OBD2 on Wikipedia it seams that those 2 cables are needed though so guess i gotta get busy and put it in.

what speed sensor have you got in the aw11 box to send the signal to the celica dash?

I'm running the 6 speed box that came with the celica (C60). I was running the mechanical speedo drive from my original aw box but i've now swapped back to the electronic speedo sensor that the celica originally had.

might be an idea but I played with an engine swap on a late model 3sfse and the speedo signal was sent from the abs computer via the multiplexer coms link thing to the engine ecu and on to the dash board from there. I ended up having to use the origional ecu to generate the signal and keep everything happy. Had to trick the existing ecu with "conditioned" signals from the new ecu. You may need the abs computer to generate the speed signal for the engine ecu
