Spoke to a testing officer today, hill starts are one of the test options, it depends on who you get on the day as to which of the options you do.

Hill starts, 3 point turns, reversing in to a drive way, parallel parking, few others but i got distracted by all 3 phones going at once

I sat on my au learners for a couple of years after coming back, and just never bothered getting my licence. It's a pain in the arse, and I regret it now.

I wish, you should see some of the piles of crap driving around, if i was a cop i'd do a "random wof & reg check" on them in a heart beat.

But yeah macdonalds bags all over the main road, and the little shits keep doing burnouts and generally making the place look like a slum, its just lucky its such a nice area otherwise.

Hell when I got my licence you had to answer five oral questions that weren't multi choice. You would also have to understand English to pass that.

I almost failed my learners because in my oral i was asked what things i should do when approaching a level crossing and I did not say "don't cross if a train is coming"

I then had a discussion with the guy about how only an idiot would cross with a train coming and he passed me

Everytime a flatpeaker crashes into a kerb with a car full of mates because he thought he was a mean drifter when he saw it on tv, then tried to emulate it, then failed. Happens every other day in NZ.

I wear a flatpeak, have never drifted my car into a curb (Infact, since I've started wearing flat peaks, I haven't had a single accident, but when I had a mullet, I had a couple - that wern't my own fault - food for thought, maybe you should mullet over? Hah).

Took a 6 month loss of license for sustained loss of traction to get me to smarten up and drive responsibly. But, in saying that, If I hadn't of been a maggot back then, I wouldn't have learnt how to control a car when it does preak traction - Case in point: A few weeks back I was heading down the Kaimais at night in the Levin (FWD). Was heading downhill around a right hand bend under brakes when I hit a patch of gravel/sand/loose material on the road & the rear end stepped. I wound on a bit of opposite lock, accelerated and pulled the car straight. If I had, however, braked harder, I would have spun. I know this because of the times in my youth when I did handbrake turns/drifts in carparks / where ever.

I try to drive conservatively these days, I'm more interested in saving gas than impressing anyone.

Yes people grow up, but without proper training they won't know how to drive.
No where in the road does it address basic car control - This is something that should be taught by an instructor under controlled conditions.

For the record, nowhere have I said that every person who wears a flatpeak will drive like an idiot, just that most times when I see someone driving like an idiot, they have a flatpeak cap, and/or hoody up whilst driving, and without fail, a car full of passengers.

Its almost like its a prerequisite to have 5 people in your car at all times if you drive like an idiot in a car thats got chopped springs and bouncing along on its bump stops, risking the lives of all inside....again, Darwinism at work.

All that aside, I completely agree with you in regards to the lack of driver training being at fault here. If we grew up in northern Europe, the amount of training we would get before even being allowed to drive on public roads is huge. Its no surprise there are so many AMAZING drivers from up that way...Makkinen, Hakkinen, Kankkinen, Raikkonen et al

This, i still cant get over how people just disregarding everything as stereo typing these days... where did the stereotypes come from in the first place? i heap of people fitting the stereo typing displaying the same behaviour

You just hit the nail squarely on the head there. It's far too easy to get a licence in NZ, and as most the posts on here can attest, there are way too many muppets on the road who seem to remove their head and replace it with a cabbage the instant their arse hits the drivers seat.

I'd take a guess that 80% of every day drivers have no idea how to deal with a loss of traction, whether it's locking up brakes, understeer, oversteer or whatever.

I reckon some kind of advanced driving course should be compulsory before you're allowed to drive by yourself.


I'm not claiming to be the world's best driver by any stretch, and I used to do silly things in cars when I was younger too. Having said that, my first car silly things were done in a 1.5l carby Civic, not a WRX or GTS-T (but that's a completely separate rant) but at least I (and most of you here, I'm sure) know what to do when the shit hits the fan.

Lift off oversteer (inertia drifts) & rollovers are realy the only dangers the muppets face.

I don't have ABS or traction control on either of my cars, don't need it.

Everyone should learn to drive in a MANUAL Escort or KE20 on a gravel road. Because then you learn to Drive the car, and not just push pedals & turn a wheel.

My first car I bought in 1990 was a Ke25 SR coupe and I paid $20 for it. That taught me SOOOOO much about car control, something you cannot learn if your car is on rails up until the point where shit hits the fan.

Learning to drive something with progressive handling is something the kids these days dont have the luxury of unfortunately.

Sure, a lot of cars have whizbang computer devices in them these days, but still doesn't stop them from doing stupid things in places they shouldn't be doing them. EG 100kph in a 50kph.
