2L Cambelt Issue

Postby AE86less » Thu Aug 11, 2011 5:22 pm

My work van (not owned by me thank goodness!) has just $&#$% out with a cambelt issue. The belt is only about 50 000kms old and the van was serviced 4 days before.

It died as you would expect when the cambelt breaks, however once the mechanic pulled it apart he found the belt intact minus all the teeth around the crank pulley. He isn't entirely sure why this happened, there were no bolts/stones/other detritus to cause the belt to skip or seize.

Any ideas?

Cam bearing seizing or loose belt, maybe tensioner bearing.

As above, something got pretty tight. Otherwise its a belt starting to fail from oil contamination? Might pay to find out what oil was used too

Would not be at all surprised if it was this...so many people just throw a belt on when they do it, tensioners etc arent meant to last 200,000k's

We dug out the old invoice, it definately had a new tensioner with the belt. Oil was fine, proper diesel oil at the correct level etc. It's been a very well looked after van.

This mechanic is defiantely straight up and down

I went and had a play, the only pulley that wasn't turning freely was on the end on the camshaft

From previous experience (not personal of course) sounds like that belt has done to many k's, or was far to tight which would cause a bit of a whirring sound even at idle like its pulling on a bearing
