anyone know much about power windows?

Postby .:O4AGTZ:. » Mon Aug 22, 2011 12:22 pm

Well the car is a 1995 Nissan Pulsar Hatch, and on saturday I was putting a new headunit in. My partner came and took a look and as she does, closes the passenger door with the brute force I tell her not to with all the time.

The passenger window went back inside the door (at sort of the speed you would expect when it goes down normally). And wouldnt go back up.

I could hear stuff working but the window not moving. I pulled the door panel off and had a look. I can see it has one central cable going up and down that presumably lifts and pulls the window, but that was moving without the window and not too smoothly either, sort of like it was binding somwhere (no idea what the inside of the motor is like, but also not sure how this would cause the motor to crap out). There is a small gear at the top that the cable loops over and it appeared to have come off that, I presumed as there was no tension on the cable anymore from the window.

Does anyone have any ideas what the issue could be here? It sounds like due to the loss of tension the motor has probably coiled up on itself inside or something, but not sure how the cable can move without the window....

Thanks!

Does that explain the cable somehow moving without the window?

I figured the motor will need replacing either way now due to the sudden lack of tension has probably may it screwy inside.

Hit pick a part. If there's an N15 out there, just grab the whole lot out of a wreck there for not much money.

Should be a very quick easy job.

Yeah thats the plan. I had a quick check and I think there is one up there. I had a look at how it works etc and have no problem removing one motor and putting another on. The bit that has me stumped is that the motor and cable still go up and down but the window doesnt.

How does the normally connect to the cable that moves it? You cant budge it up at all so it seems to me as though there is the other end of the cable holding it down and the one that moves upwards has dislodged itself. Either way by understanding is that the motor needs to replacing now as it has been moving without the required tension on it.

The same sort of thing happened to my Corolla a while ago when I slammed the driver's door really hard. The window would go down, but not back up. Discovered that there's a little plastic piece that's attached to the wire which pulls the window up that had snapped off when I slammed the door. Ended up replacing the whole regulator and it worked perfectly again. Sent a driver's regulator overseas once too and noticed that it had tiny hairline cracks on that plastic piece, so they must get stressed over the years of constant door shutting. Not sure if the Nissan's have the same set-up, but that's what happened to mine.

sounds very similar. There is a plastic looking wheel at the top of the door that the cable goes over. It had jumped off that, but I believe that was caused by the loss of tension more than anything else. If I pull the window switch up to make the window go up the cable winds upwards and you can see a little square piece attached to the wire only 4 or 5mm long. I presumed that this orginally hooked into something that slamming the door made it jump out of.

The plan is to mish to pickapart in the weekend and butcher a door off an n15 up there to have a look how it works and get a replacement if needed. Would be good to have an indication though but it seems that its starting to make sense.

Yep, that sounds right. The little plastic piece hooks behind the track and renders the wire useless when it snaps off. I managed to find a photo I took when I sent a regulator the same as mine overseas, which shows that little plastic piece:

That pic was really useful thanks! The basic principle seems to be what I expected and the same on yours pretty much as the pulsar. Except on the pulsar the wire runs up the middle of the track as opposed to next to it. Something has definately broke that connects the part attached to the window to the the wire.

you'll probably find the motor is ok and can be transfered across to the new regulator

but if you find one at pickas its prob cheap enough to grab both eh.

hope the missus learned her lesson, hah

spot on! actually, so far she has done the same to this car, her car and two previous cars I have had. All the others were wind up windows though. thinking about banning her from windows in general
