Intercooler pipe flaring/ridging

So I've made up my new aluminium intercooler piping, had some welded but need the ends flared/ridged to stop the silicon joiners sliding off under boost. Who does that? Exhaust shop? Pitstop? Guttering installer?

Alloy is soft and might crack. I ran into this problem so i just had my welder weld an alloy bead around the edge of the pipe. I run decent power and have never had any trouble with pipes coming off

How much boost are you planning on running, and what turbo?

Before I went na-t, I read plenty of storys about couplers popping off, but I expect alot of it will be a case of loose/cheap clamps.

For what its worth, Ive never popped a coupler off but Im only running 11/12psi through a small T4.

ive popped silicon joiners off on both my evo and my gtx, the gtx would do it as soon as i spooled up to about 14psi...

i think its worth getting the ends lipped/flared

You could also try a few sheetmetal places to see if they have bead rollers, they might tend to be this style:

And the rollers may be too large to fit inside your pipe

I've got pipes wired together with tabs welded onto the pipes. They'll never blow apart. Don't need ricer hoseclamps either.

Not sure about boost levels yet as the 1J is only running 2JZ injectors with the T04Z but that bead roller is exactly what I was thinking of. If I don't go that route I'll probably get a lip welded on the ends. Cheers

With alloy pipes I find it best to use standard type hose clamps, T bolt clamps have a bad habit of deforming the soft alloy pipe even at relatively low torques

Use aircraft alloy pipping, You can get it in different sizes, not that expensive and some weird angles... I am using it to hook my intercooler up to my supercharger. Easy to join and very strong and light.

I have 3" stainless steel so I dont think I can crush that.

I guess I should take advice and get my pipe ends beaded so I dont find out the hard way why people do it. I plan on increasing boost a few psi once the new box goes in so I may as well pre empt the issue.

I've heard them referred to as croxing tools too, but google didn't seem to agree. I usually borrow Alert Motorsport's one, it's a bit simpler than the ones I posted and looks like it would be cheaper - is it likely that plumbing supply shops would carry them?

I run T-bolt clamps on my alloy piping and run 18-23psi at the moment and havent had any problems with pipes changing shape etc now pipes blowing off and i only have small beads around the ends of pipes ....

The tool required is called a Jenny or swaging tool. Hope that helps

My piping just had a few runs of weld on the ends of the piping, don't need to run a bead all the around. No problems at 20 psi with normal hose clamps or T bolt clamps
