strut shaft thickness

Postby RS13 » Mon Oct 03, 2011 8:51 pm

Just bought a strut for the missus's daily, however when I went to install I found that the shaft diameter is about 22mm, whereas the one I removed was 18mm.

Pretty sure the listing they used was quite specific to her model, it fits perfectly otherwise to the hub/swaybar/brake line etc. Is it worth going back and trying to hunt down an 18mm one or would the shaft/dampening difference be unnoticeable?

Cheers!

The only draw back (if top hat bolts on properly) is that the stock bump stop might not fit without special treatment.

Yes, this is how I found out! Won't go on without a lot of persuasion. So you're saying I should be fine?

I have almost twice thicker Bilstein inserts in my ST165, and it is fine ;).

I think the point is that only one shock is being replaced so there will be a side to side difference

Oh yes, good point, didn't spot that. Always replace both if buying brand new. If you are bothering with s/h struts... well, good luck.

Given that replacing both would amount to a good portion of the cars' worth, I'm not too keen to replace the other one when its' working fine and not leaking, just after a direct replacement really. Sounds like it might be easier to try track down the same, looking at them side by side the body of the shock is considerably thicker and longer by an inch or so as well. Not s/h either, new part.

Just beware that with one brand new shock and other well used, it will have tendency to pull to a side under hard braking.

I'd have assumed that for the front, but this is a rear shock? I can't imagine it being any worse than having a working one and a buggered leaking one.
