26.7inc x 11.02in for the unit. that does not include the tail pipe or turboprop gearbox (which weights more then the jet engine!!!)

if i could afford a pratt and whitney or rollys royce turbine from a 747 i would buy one... years and years ago now i was offered a j85 from a f4.... i turned it down...

The Aluxary power unit of a 747 needs to be big to cope in case turbine shut down.. mine is just a light weight turbine for hobbiest use.

normally it tskes between 2 and 4 years to get a kit aircraft into the air. i think maybe 18 months or so give or take a few years....

Yeah.. a CF6 or RB211 might be a little overkill for a Storch! ;)

Yeah, maybe a 747, but the GTCP85s out of the 737 (classics, the NGs have a larger APU again) have a turbine diameter of 10" or so, and aren't much more than a metre long.

Are there any decent P-40 kits on the market? Googling brings up a couple of options but they're wood, which just doesn't seem right for a rep WW2 fighter that isn't a Hurricane! lol.

That is fairly small, for that amount of power!

Interesting idea for a car project. You could run it on diesel :). Diesel-electric car......

Yeah, most are pretty bland.. I had considered something small like a tin Corby Starlet, but now you've got me looking through super STOL aircraft, so many options out there! Good decision using alloy, I'm not a huge fan of wood either.. gotta be able to put my trade cert in structures to good use! lol. :)

Also, found a tin 2-seater 3/4 scale p40.. looks much nicer than most other kits, not much info on it though.. I think your little turbine would fit quite nicely in the front!

I like STOL as they are much more even to fly and have good handling qualities, problem with war-planes is they turn very rapidly and are designed to dog fight, which with a turboprop can get you in trouble very quickly..

Maybe I should modifiy the Storch to suit???

Well with the new engine the top speed would be higher then the original....
258hp vs 400hp.. maybe need a new plane design

Pfft top speed.. who cares about that when you're taking off from helipads in a fixed wing! :)

I worked it out, with the turbine on full power take off run would be 17m!!!!
A f-16 needs atake off run of 1140m with afterburner

If i increase wing area and flaps, i could get her off under 15m!!!!

Should I go with it?? its very tempting...

Sounds like it should be an F14, coz it will feel like being launched from a carrier :P

Doooo eeeeet! STOL is awesome. Surely modding the engine mount to fit the turboprop wouldn't be too hard?

Hmm not really sorry, you'd probably have better luck asking around the GA chaps? Not much call for tubing in commercial, most plumbing lines etc are off-the-shelf items.

I will stay wityh the tried and true.....

But none can come close to a Spitfire, Mustang or Thunderbolt..... they are true aircraft!

LOL @ F16 not battle tested... Its almost as old as you are and has probably seen more action than you have ;)

*****
And this seems vaguely on topic...

A couple of F-16's are escorting a C-130 Hercules, and their pilots are chatting with the pilot of the transport to pass the time. Talk comes ‘round to the relative merits of their respective aircraft. Of course the fighter pilots contend that their airplanes were better because of their superior speed, maneuverability, weaponry, and so forth, while the putting down the Herc’s deficiencies in these areas.

One of fighter jocks says to the C-130 pilot, "watch this!" He went into a Barrel roll, followed by a steep climb, then finished with a sonic boom when he reached the speed of sound.

The F-16 pilot asked the C-130 pilot what he thought.

The C-130 pilot responded "that was impressive, but I can do a few things in this old girl that you'd only dream about."

Naturally, the fighter jocks challenge him to demonstrate.

"Just watch," comes the quick retort.

The C-130 droned along for about 15 minutes then the C-130 pilot came back on and said "What did you think about that?"

The 16 pilot asked, "What did you do?"

The C-130 pilot responded "I got up, stretched my legs, went to the back, poured a cup of coffee and took a piss."

Compared to the F4, A4, A1, A6, A7e, etc which service thru Vietnam, the gulf etc...

I would not count Afghanistan and the gulf as "Real" wars as they didn't shoot back..

If i can increase wing area by 4m2 i can take off in 14m which is a helicopter pad... hmm nah that cant work

Hmm i wounder how big a supra engine bay is.... and would it fit?

I could if it was not highly illegal and would get me thrown in jail..

I need to register the jet engine with the new zealand police as a deadly weapon already... if i took off from my property they would have me squealing like a pig in no time..

I have 5 acre section i could build a runway.. but would never get planning permission
