fuel level and smoothness of gear changing, 4AGE

Postby Tagged » Tue Nov 01, 2011 12:49 am

not sure if its just me or if theres actually something attributed to this, but my gears seems to become harder to shift smoothly when fuel level gets really low, like almost down to the last line. Is there actually a reason for this??

oh and what kinda mileage do you guys get out of a standard 4AGE?

A very common question, thanks for taking the time to ask it here.

yes, there is a sensor in your fuel tank which detects fuel level and adjusts shift feeling in response.

lower the level the harder they make changing gear.

to reset the engines fuel gearshift computer you must start the car, turn off the car, take out the key then toot the horn 5 times.

You must be imagining it. Change the gearbox oil and it might give you a nicer gearchange.

A '4age' comes in many variations but I'd expect 11 to 12 km per litre at least. Unless constant stop go traffic/thrashing the pants off of it or there is a bad sensor/its running cold/your running 91 in it/short trips to the dairy every 30min.

more likely is the fact that the fuel pump will be running out of fuel. mine surges when taking off from lights or sometimes changing gears anywhere under 1/2-1/3 of a tank ish. has only started doing it since i put the link in the car and i suspect the toyota ecu had a few clever things to stop this happening.
but its never a good idea to run your tank right empty. and yes you could be imagining it as well i never used to notice my car surging before i had the link.

why wouldn't you? No point only using half of what your tank can hold.
If you suspect there is shit in your tank get it cleaned. I run my tank to within 4-5l of dead empty every tank. Always have and have never had an issue.

oh! I posted a question somewhere long time ago asking if 91 is okey for 4AGEs and most responses were positive. What are the affects of using 91 in 4AGEs??

I think there's still about 7 or 8Ls of gas when the gauge hits dead on the last line in my BZR, not sure if they are all like that though :)

Where did you post that? 91 is too low for 4ages, while it won;t hurt older ones. they will not run at their best.

i'm pretty sure the general concensus from that thread was that 91 was NOT good for blacktops. it will still run but only at a pinch if you really have to. (i.e. stuck in the middle of no where with nothing but a jerry can full of 91)

i would recommend throwing your O2 out and replacing, cleaning intake manifold out and changing your spark plugs pronto if you have been running 91 in it..

..or just keep doing what youre doing and enjoy no fuel economy with the added bonus of a rod out the block

yea lol i went and found the old thread and realised I've only followed half of it....well luckly i've been switching between 91 95 and 98....lol running on 98 at the moment. Testing out fuel economy on all three of them.

what im doing is filling up $30 of gas once the gauge is dead on the last line. see how many Ks it would go until it hits the last line again. Not that accurate but gives a general idea :D

fill it right up to the brim, then drive and record kays. then record exact amount to refill it.
you will need to do that for at least 3 tanks.
Otherwise your figures will mean 0

No 50l. And empty light is supposed to come on when there is 8l left in the tank.
