stuck outer tie rod

Postby DeeCee » Sun Nov 27, 2011 5:32 pm

So I'm in the processing of replacing my outer tie rods. Rack is out of the car (like every other part) and I've loosen the jam nut, but the tie rod won't screw off. Any one got some tips to help?

seems that way sometimes. Though if this was on the car, what would work instead? I'd be scared to bend the steering arm with the force I hit the tie rod body with

leave ball joint attached, spray with penetrate goodness and hope it will come undone (it didn't). thought of cutting it off/ grinding it down but doubted my ability to miss the thread of the inner tie rod.

In the end I replaced inner and outer after finding that someone else had already had a go, with what looked like vice grips on the threads..

You never hit the tie rod body, you hit the hub that the taper goes into

And yeah if you're hitting the tie rod you'll be there for ages, if you hit the bit it goes into it should just pop out with a couple of decent hits

the tie rod body was stuck on the steering arm itself, not stuck in the hub carrier. Rack was already removed.
