Australian police cracking down on modified cars

Postby siren676 » Wed Jan 25, 2012 3:49 pm

Just saw this on youtube and it seems like Australia's rules are rather harsh compared to ours.

Looks like even the slightest thing can get your car defected

Did we watch the same video??

What do you call slightest defect?
I saw 117dB - limit being 96 (according to owner)
Illegal muffler that changes sound level
bald tyres
doors held shut by bungy cords
list goes on - here or aussie that shit will get you fined / car off the road.

If your car is up to a safe legal standard then it looks like you can modify things. Some states have no frequent WOF checks so of course cars will be running around not up to standard more than here. But going by the video it doesn't look any worse than here IMO.

Didn't watch the video but I find the Aussie system a bit odd.

In most (?) states the only time a car gets an equivalent check to our WOF is if the owner sells the car. Or if the owner gets pulled over by the Police.

So for Police, whats the easiest way to pick up a potenially dangerous car? Pick the modified car with the chance the owner has done some dodgey mods.

Rather scarey when you consider a lot of people don't look over their cars and faults aren't picked up till WOF's here in NZ!

I believe an ex-pat Kiwi TS'er recently got done for a pod filter too coughcogentcough

I like the aussie law about not allowing people to have turbo cars untill their on their full liecence, i know there are probably loopholes but for the most part it seems like a step in the right direction

But they should have abit more driving experience rather than jumping straight into the high powered turbo car, and stacking it. Although some people will never have any driving skills and will do that no matter how much driving they've done

90% of those cars probably wouldnt have been bothered if they werent stupidly loud.

117db is crazy! i couldnt stand driving something like that myself.

i dont understand why people want their cars so loud

I think only QLD and SA requires a roadworthy only when the ownership changes hands (ie new owner transfers existing rego or regos it with their own plates). All other states require an inspection annually to get new rego.

Many states are really strict on altering emissions equipment, which is why sometimes even removing a factory air box and putting a pod filter in its place can get you in trouble. In QLD it's fine though, so long as the filter piping is supported.

Though I am glad I drive a bog standard Camry here, no one including cops even looks twice at me.

Ah sweet, thought some states were tougher than others. Some states will send notices to owners requiring them to go for emission testing if they are seen (should that be heard?) with modified exhausts!

A Camry? Better be a v6 :P

Aussie cops are such arseholes, I've been pulled over for RBT's a couple of times and they process you like a animal going to slaughter. I'm always polite and courteous, I've only ever been pulled up in legit cars with rego and up to roadworthy.

I was out in the hybrid camry from work the other day, I'd only just borrowed it and the lights were set to auto for dark. Went to pick up my brother from a concert about 11pm. Cop asks me why my fog lights are on, I apologized and said I didn't realise, explained its a work car and I just borrow it, lights on auto and his mate comes over and start explaining to me about how to read the owners manual etc.

I'm pretty sure the cop in bad boy bubby portrays the australian police force pretty well.

I have heard similar things, apparently unlike NZ cops which are scared to put a foot wrong and are ussually quite reasonable. many of the aussie cops are on a mad powertrip

Did hear a few storys during the ChCh earthquakes of the ozzy cops being a bit 'harsh' when they were over here, not all a bad thing though as there were some serious scum looting places at the time, a few beatings here and there

NZ cops need to harder the $&#$% up. Unfortunately it's NZ's attitude in general that is too soft.

I'm all for crime prevention and law enforcement but bull shit traffic laws with fines (was threatened with $90 for the fog lights & $200 when my bikes p plate broke in half)

Just cos you're a cop doesnt mean you can't engage in a conversation in which you aren't a complete arsehole.

Negative. RWC is required upon sale in VIC as well. (can only comment on VIC, because the transport rules are state specific and vary from state to state)

The rules are less defined and a bit mind boggling.

Cars can be 'engineered' (similar idea to cert) but it expires after 30 days.

Engineering is required if the engine is changed to one that is not available as an option from factory, if seats are changed.. blah blah.

if engineered it must also gain a RWC to be used on the road.

which seems like a waste of time to me, because after 30 days the engineering is worthless anyway

and yes.. it means that its up to the cops interpretation of the rules...[/i]

its a great law - but holy $&#$% it doesnt stop the whole "tards gonna tard" shit

i read the Aussie supra forums occasionally and there is a constant flow of

"im on my P's and bought a TT supra" with the next bit being one of the following:

"how can i drive it without getting it impounded?"

"how can i convert it to NA"

"can i just drive around off boost?"

"can i stuff the turbo full of rags so it wont turn?"

i also recall reading a skyline forum where they just removed the front of the turbo and bolted a plate on it - essentially making it NA - and it drove like a dog and got wasted by everything on the road it was that slow and wet

Great initiative by the Aussie cops. We need some of that action over here.
Mind you, our dickheads will just clock up 20k worth of fines, have them commuted to 30 hours community service, buy another car on tick and do the same shit all over again.

I didnt think fines could be transferred to community service now?, thought they changed that rule?
