Any reason you are looking at the wagon over the Corolla RunX-Z?

I quite enjoyed it as a daily driver, plenty of room to fold the seats down, easy to get 600km out of the tank (if you keep your foot out of it )

Its 15k per year, but that will also need to cover insurance and services etc so want to spend 10k and ideally keep 5k per year to cover those costs.

Looked at Euros to, but seem to be a big unknown in regards to repairs and service costs seem to be much higher. Would consider a BMW or Audi if I knew they could be cost effective.

Have also come up with a suggestion from the wife, since I have 4 kids it would be handy to have another 7 seater, so thought the Toyota Ipsum might be a contender

My Mazda MPV is horrible on gas (480k max to a tank) and also took my brothers well sorted Legnum VR4 to the Hawkes bay last week - was $100 each way on gas and it is only a 600k return trip, so taking that into account I want to really have good fuel economy in case i want to do road trips etc

my mate had one and on the open road it got 500kms from a 55ltr tank and around town it got 400-450

They are really nice to drive too and dont suffer from the reliability issues of the earlier models

If I understand you correctly, in that you are saying you will own the car at the end of two years, and would then sell it to put phat monies in pocket. Then I'd suggest pick something that is holding value really well.

So, not a BMW, Ford, or a Peugeot. I could be wrong, but they appear to depreciate like they're on fire and rolled in dog poop.

Corolla, Mazda3 would seem to be less depreciating on average.

Correct, I would own the car, so it was my thought exactly - Buy a car that is fun etc but will hold value and recoup some free money

That limits your options some-what.. a modern diesel turbo? But doubt you wil find one for the price you're looking at. 7 seaters and economy don't really go well together if you're looking at older vehicles from what I've seen..

Toyota Ipsum, Honda Stream, Mazda MPV are all 7 seaters that you would find in my price range - Do I want to have another boring people mover or a fun semi performance car is the real question

if you can tame your right foot then they are no worse than most other late model 2ltrs and you have the power there when you need it

Reading up on Subclub and my 3litre legacy uses the same amount of fuel as the 2 litres but still has enough grunt to have a little fun.

if you want a 7 seater you could do worse than a stream.

no manual ones afaik, but they go ok in 2L (for a people mover anyway) and being a bit more car like (based on a civic i believe) than van like (odyssey, MPV etc) they handle semi ok too.

thats what i would buy if i wanted 7 seats anyway, at least in your price range.

Given what you can afford, you can potentially look at a budget of $35,000.00 on a finance lease, put 10% deposit/first payment, and have a balloon repayment at the end of the 36 month term of $10,500.00 (30% of purchase price). This would work out to be approx $840 per month. You can work on a higher balloon repayment at the end of the term, but this would be subject to kilometers and condition of vehicle.

This giving you a newer vehicle, which will be more reliable, and come with a manufacture warranty. After three years, depending on how far you have travelled you should easily be able to sell the vehicle for more than the balloon payment.

The other thing you may want to consider, would be your new employers expectation of a vehicle, if seeing clients/lots of travel etc.

Agree, mine is fine around town, current tank I have done just over 450km I think and its now in the bottom quarter. They can be suprisingly good on fuel. Same model as the red one from the TM link.

Mazda 6 MPS ticks most boxes, another worth considering is a aurion touring yes its auto and V6 but they are reasonably economical and luxurious

Another option would be a VW Passat, either fwd 2.0 FSI turbo (same motor as golf GTI) or 4wd 3.2 v6 both with clutchless manual paddleshift/auto box

Spend $20k get a 2005+ modern safe car, you wont regret it ever

you have one of the cool early series one too which means no lame boost reduction in 1st and 2nd
