I need the full truth about bucket seats and wofs??

Postby LEAKER » Wed Feb 08, 2012 6:41 pm

Can anyone advise 100% what the situation is.

I want to put fixed back bucket seats in my gt4. Do i have to rip out the back seats" I have factory rails which were modified for reclinable bucket seats and which have passed every wof for the last 5 years but if i'm going to fit fixed backs i suspect i may run into problems??

so theoretically if it's modded, it needs certing.
Interesting that it hasn't been pulled up on it for the last 5 years.
I remember everyone used to talk about fixed back bucket seats being illegal in 2 door cars etc etc. I can't see any mention of that. Would that be a question for a certifier?

On a slightly related note, how does one exactly register a vehicle as a 2 seater? I've heard of this hundreds of times but never come across this. My MR2 isn't registered any differently to any of the other cars I own and all my previous cars I've pulled the rear seats out of carried on just fine with the seatbelts removed and no registration changes. Is this just another urban legend?

My understanding (didn't read any of the above articles so not sure if 100%) is that if the seat and rails are bolt up with no drilling/cutting involved and are of reputable brand then it's fine.

I've passed dozens of cars like this and will continue to do so as I don't see it being a problem.

If the rails or mounting points have been $&#$% with (or homemade rails) then I'd fail them.

Yes, as long as not subject to frontal impact laws and it does not affect the seat belt.

I've left it out as im too skinny and the 3 point seatbelt doesnt sit on me, it sits on the sides of the seat.
Do the frontal impact laws mainly apply to cars with airbags?

If you are fitting fixed back bucket seats to a 2 door car and you need to re-register your car as a 2 seater, just remove your back seats, and seat belts and go to any VTNZ testing station to have your car inspected and recategorised. Its free

Just be sure to NEVER think its ok to put some passengers in the back after doing this as the fines arent cheap.

That would then be a fail, no?

Yeah most likely. I only put it in the car for racing so I just use the harness to and from the track.
