i just got a filter sock from the local radiator place.

undo top hose, slip over radiator end, push the tail into the radiator, put hose back on.

looks a bit like a finger off a cotton glove, caught a lot of crap in my cooling system.

Is it something that you only leave on for a short time?

Otherwise it could stop the flow of water/break due to all the crap collecting in it?

Trying to force too much water through it could damage things.
Then again if you are in an area with low water pressure maybe all you will do it blow back though your pipes :lol:

I ran mine for about a week and cleaned it, left it in for another month and it caught bugger all

How much did they charge you for the cock sock?

Might look into running one for a while just incase I have any crust left in my CS.

I'm gonna tip the radiator upside down and hang it up, block off the hot port and jam the garden hose in the cold port and the radiator cap should help pressure remove the crap in there, then that filter should keep it good from then on...

The filter I was talking about is for trucks etc. Its actually not a filter as such. But contains pellets that dissolve prolonging coolant life.

I really do think a filter is a bad idea. It will concentrate all gunk and potentially block it up.

I'm very used to reading the temperature gauge and pulling over when it creeps, etc. After every drive I check my coolant, I'm very used to having a blocked radiator, I'd rather have a little mesh filter to clear out every time rather than go through radiator after radiator...

The thing is that the coolant should not have any particles in it.
If it has there is something wrong.
So if you eliminate what is causing particles (bad coolant) and clean the system thoroughly, you should not need any filters.
Of course if it has been under kiwi maintenance for a few years, then the block is rusted to bits and you will have no end of rust flakes collecting on the bottom of the radiator, but putting a filter is not going to help that (it will block pretty fast).
you will need to chemically clean the cooling system to get rid of flakes, but that is dangerous because it can remove excess and cause leaking head gasket.
Without chemical cleaning it will take years for it to normalize, meanwhile once a few month you can drain and clean radiator....

Kiwis need to attach a zinc brick inside of the block the way they service their cars....

I have used the sock type as well on my AE85, they work well caught heaps of rusted 3A block. So much that it did block up completely after the first 30min, but then less after that, and after about 3 socks worth it was pretty clear so I could put on a new radiator without fear of blocking that up.

Worst bit was when the sock ended up inside the radiator top cap and so full of rust i couldn't pull it back out again. had to use a tiny spoon to empty the sock enough.

The point to the fancy aluminium one that I posted about is that it is easy to check and easy to clean. If it slowly starts to block your temp will slowly rise and when you see that you can clean it in 2min after its all cooled down then happy days.

Got good water pressure & 19mm garden hose & only very loose stuff clogging it? If not, it'll stay put. Any radiator with 1/2 its tubes clogged will still be able to easily handle any garden hose, hence the 'air' helper.
