wrx sti vs st205 gt4

Im on the hunt for a new vehicle, all it is going to be used for is a weekend racer, with a couple of track days thrown in. Ive previously owned a sti coupe which i loved, but have always loved the look of the st205 gt4 or even a gt4 rc st185. How would they compare to the sti?

Any issues with them when you start pushing them hard, i know the subbys can run out of oil when pushing them hard around corners causing them to run bearings quite easy.

Engine wise ill be keeping them pritty stock as i want to try and keep them reliable, but will be looking at decent suspension and brakes maybe a roll cage, so getting aftermarket parts is also a priority.

Any advise would be great or other options aswell will be considered, budget for vehicle is $10,000

I would say the Toyota would be the better bet if youre planning on keeping it relatively stock.

As you say, the boxer engines have a bad rep for running bearings at the track so just stick with good old toyota reliability ;)

Version 3-5 RA STI, maybe earlier if tidy enough but that would be a stretch finding a tidy one of those :roll:

If you are going for an sti go for a version 4 + they changed the engine at that point and are meant to be alot more reliable.
EX:89 RS and GT Legacys, 90 EF9 Civic, 95 Integra R, 95 AE101, 90 ST185, 88 Accord, 87 3rdoor and 5door Swift hatch, 91 Pontiac Lemans, 80 Liftback Celica, 95 Hornet 250

Yeah i think around the version 3 must be a cross over year, as i noticed when i bought my version 4 type r that the version 3 i looked at had the same engine but didnt have airbags and had the earlier dash ect. Very confusing with the wrx as there seems to be soooo many different models and variations, such as your ra ltd, sti ra, imports and nz new ones, they all seem to have different turbos or options, very confusing lol :?

Stock for stock, I'd take the STI over the GT4 without batting an eyelid. STI's are rocketships in comparison. Reliability is about the same between the two. The big telling point will be your budget though. $10k will get you a nicer ST205 than it will an STI. If your budget can be stretched, there is a third option that is better than both the substitute teachers :twisted: :lol:

Really? If talking early sti I'd take the gt4. A much better car for everything unless you want to carry passengers.

Ill get shot for saying it, but it seems Integra R Types are quite the track car, if you decide to get serious you can build on it, seems to be quite a few racing classes they can compete in.

My GFs cousin runs one in the Honda Cup, roll caged and stripped out with some basic NA mods and beefed up suspension they handle real well and no turbo lag to worry about :)

If your talking about an evo i think they are over priced, particully the early ones (1,2 and 3) and dont get me started on gsr :roll: But yes if i could afford one i think i would have one over the sti and gt4

And im not worried about passengers, the thing that draws me to the gt4 is they are alot rarer in the fact you dont see so many around driven by dip shits.

Yes the type r has crossed my mind, but im a bit of a rally fan hence why i would like a 4wd turbo with a bit of pedigree i guess you could say :lol:

Yeah they're not cheap but IMO a 3/5/6 would be the perfect weekend warrior. 3's are getting a bit long in the tooth and in general, an unmolested Evo is hard to come by and demands lots of $$$. GSR's are rubbish - don't even go there :lol:

Good luck though, either way you're gonna get something capable.

Plus GT4's don't carry anywhere near the stigma of "boyracer" like Subarus/Evos do. Plus seem to be a lot less common.

My vote would be for a ST185RC just for being something different to the norm on the roads.

Yes i do have a soft spot for the RC, just a matter of finding a nice one, but than id feel bad for modding it :lol:
