Possibly point to point vs a normal WRX, no chance against an STI imo.

Would be pretty interesting comparison actually...an ST205 would be quicker than a early WRX, but I think a WRX would do better in twisty roads

Did you take into account suspension condition and tyre type of both?

Well none were worn out. Buggered if I could tell you what tyres were on them. Have driven more than one of each car too. I definitely find the 205s. Much more planted

My flatmate burning angel has a 99 RA completely stock which i have driven hard a good number of times and the same with a couple 205's, I can tell you that with a late ish model WRX (99) the wrx would have the st205 for breakfast.

Easy

It might be different story with a stock WRX running the td04 which runs out of puff at 5k rpm vs the vf 22 that his RA gets from the STI models.

So not only can he get a much faster STI for the same money as an ST205 but it'll be newer too?

Not sure if this has been posted before, but I considered it for a daily/toy before picking up a near stock V5 STi hatch for similar money.

Here's a quick vid of mine before I replaced the slightly worn turbo. It feels planted and is ridiculously easy to drive quick in the twisties

I brought a roughish Evo 4 for $7200k.. which had already had a low mileage evo 6 engine fitted and new evo 9 clutch/flywheel...

since then i havetweaked a few things.. converted it to evo 8 Brembo's, kelford 264 cams, freshly built 20g evo 9 turbo,720cc injectors, flashable evo 7 ecu, mechanical rear lsd, adj suspension, and a certed it..

I was pretty careful on what i brought, and how much i spent though...

The total cost so far is just on $11,500.. i dare say bang for buck it would be fairly difficult to beat as far as a mid 90's 4wd turbo goes..

agree with others though... If I was on the look out for a track car it would be a 98 spec ITR.. to keep running costs in check.

No offence dude but a good sti from the late 90's will be FAR quicker than a good similarly stock st205 on the track, dont get me wrong, I LOVE st205's but they are not in the same league as the evo or sti from the same time period when it comes to track work.

The 205's weigh about 150kg more and make slightly less power[/quote]

yeah yeah everyone has there own opinions and is going to go on how great watever they have had is the best. In my experience a st205 is quicker than wrx's, a good sti will have a bit more, tho it wouldnt be much more , an evo will be a tad quicker to tho you will find in a striaght line 4th gear will bring the two cars near side by side..
an evo and sti will handle abit better to

You will probably find more than half the st205's dont go that good, i have had a chance to test drive a number of them and alot of them lack power, wether by poor care, or some fault letting the ecu reduce power, blocked cat bla bla for watever reason, a good st205 is pretty quick , on par with a v7 wrx.

tho its a personal preference, maybe you want something that isnt common like a subaru or an evo , an evo 5 if you could get one cheap would be your best bet as a track car

This! Evo 4 motor's have had a pretty bad rep, but I know of a couple high HP ones with the factory motor and they have been fine. The AYC rear diff can be an issue, but as long as you service it regulary it should be fine. In saying that most bits from Evo 5 onwards are a straight fit up.
