High temp exhaust paint. where to buy etc

Hey well i did a search and it came up with nothing but rubbish. My wagon sat outside at my brothers in Newlands Wellington for a while and the weathe is crap and has corroded the manifold etc and i want to make it look nice.

Where do i get high temp exhaust paint? Repco/Supercheap or a specialist? I want to get the manifold sand blasted then painted

VHT make a good high temp paint, I used it on my old MR2 to good effect. Rated to 1000 degrees centigrade
1988 KE70 Wagon - Slowly rusting
1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons

Used the VHT stuff (pretty sure it came from Repco) on the Euro-R's header - still looked perfect the day it was sold. Highly recommended!

Sweet as. I will be pulling it all apart soon. Getting work done on the turbo aswell as polishing Alloy to make things looking better

Yep VHT exhaust paint is great, you can also get it from BNT (wheel paint was $6.5 a can so the exhaust paint won't be too much more)

Depending on colour you can get matt black, possibly others, in the wood burner section of DIY type stores, Mitre10 etc.

+1 on VHT, currently using on my Subtech downpipe, and my old MR2 had it on its turbo exhaust housing and screamer pipes (= very hot) still looked good after a year of running.

Its all in the prep work and correct curing process.

I purchased the VHT 1300-2000 degree farenhite paint. True-no-turbo is sand blasting my manifold and then heating it up with a gas torch then applyng the paint as thats the best way apparently

Yup thats correct, spray it whilst its hot,
the kitchen oven also works well, 8)

I had my turbine housing, exhaust manifold, down pipe and dump pipe coated at procoat and have to say I wasnt very happy with the job.

Upon removing it from the box, the coating was noticeably inconsistent, some areas had less than half the amount that other areas had, and it was nowhere near as durable as I would have expected given the cost. Even the slightest of knocks or bumps removed the coating and it didnt take many heat cycles for it to thin even more in places.

At a guess, whatever their process is, I presume that part of the prep stage was omitted, or done a bit too casually, as I have seen their work on cars in magazines and the difference is night and day.

Must of been a bad day for them.

Yeah I imagine thats all it was too, and to be honest, thats whats most annoying about it. Knowing it could have been done properly but wasnt due to being a friday arvo, or monday morning etc.

It was the high temp black satin coating and it cost about $500 if my memory serves me correctly.

When did you get it done?
They did heaps of testing on mine to get the right mixture which lasted.
They start off semi gloss then turn matt - thats normal. And or course you cant hit them into things it will chip.

It was done at the beginning of 2009 so 3 years ago now.

And for the record, Im not a rough bugger and certainly wasnt hitting them into anything, or banging them around. I meticulously wrapped all the parts in bubble wrap before sending them to be coated, when they returned, lets just say the same amount of attention wasnt given and by the time I opened the box, there had already been multiple metal on metal contacts which lead to scratches and chips.

The bits that came into contact with studs etc, to get the manifold on the engine flaked off instatly and seemed like it was nothing more than flakey black paint, rather than a bonded coating as such.

The inconsistency to the coating confirmed for me that it wasnt coated properly/evenly, and the flaking material confirmed it wasnt prepped well enough for the coating to adhere to.

Glad to hear they worked hard for your car to get the right mix and hence ultimate job done, sadly in my case they didnt.

P.S Please dont think my post was written to slate them, I just gave my personal experience with them as I thought it was relevant.

i had my manifold done at procoat with the ceramichrome,

im happy with the job done for the price, its no HPC but for half or third of the price its not half bad at all.
