Six already gone. Yep well over priced.

Realistically, you're buying the car for what it is. If you wanted just speed then you would get something else. None of the complainers were going to buy one anyway. I especially liked the 20 year old price comparison. Inflation is a bitch

Bah, this is about ~$50 difference.

I think I read somewhere that both Subaru and Toyota are only bringing in the high end models.

Where as I remember reading that Toyota nz were bringing in the bare bones model, then using factory parts to build what each customer wants.

Hey, at least it sounds like a 3s.

I wasn't saying that's the ONLY difference, that's just one of them. I was merely stating that so everyone knew the site/offer is referring to the high-spec model (which has extra features as well as the better brakes) as opposed to the low-spec model.

The brakes were the only thing listed on that site that gave away the fact it's the high-spec model...

Edit: To the other posters, I would be very surprised if they only bought in the high-spec model...

Try low 40's for a RWD, 6-Speed Manual Nissan 200SX with more power less than 10 years ago.

Im sorry, 60k is ridiculous and completely misses the whole point of this car, a cheap and cheerful RWD sports car.

If I was hung up on a cramped RWD with bugger all power, for that money I would buy a BMW 1 series.

Wow, why do so many of you seem to be against this?

At least Toyota's getting back into the sports car (/whatever you want to call it) market. It's better than pumping out Corolla's all the time...

And from what the reveiws are saying, it's supposed to be damn good...

eg http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/AllCars/262247/

Neither the 370Z nor the MX-5 can thrill at that level. Compared to Subaru, they look like blunt, dull communicators here, outclassed by a new affordable driver’s car of amazing delicacy and extraordinary talent. One that could be the best sports car to come out of Japan since the Honda NSX, and that must be worth £25k from anyone who knows what sunny weekends and great roads were really made for.

Credibility of that article has to be questioned when stating BRZ/ft86 could be best thing since NSX.

Really it needs to be under 50k NZ to achieve what they want in terms of a low price sports coupe.

1 of 12 at 60k for the BRZ is a joke - thought the plan was to avoid exclusivity

Its good, its just hard to see where your money is going. Its not exactly full of high tech.

Put a XR6 turbo beside a FT-86. Same price. One of them has a shit load more components, and raw materials.... Sure different cars, different target market, but at $60k there is a lot of alternatives.

The market for NZ new stuff is irrelevant in the scheme of things, and not worth making a huff and puff about.

You'd have rocks in your head to buy a brand new car vs waiting for the floods of good conditionlow km imports for half the price, that we'll no doubt see on the roads here in a year or three.

I'd say Subaru have done quite well to estimate there are less than 12 people with enough money but not enough sense, who would consider buy brand new here.

Anyway, even if this car was $40k, who were would be buying one anyway?

Not me, $40k is still a buttload of money considering your car is likely to halve in value pretty rapidly.

Not against it, I WANT one, they are cool cars... I just knew they would get greedy with the asking price and play on the hype, its marketing like Mac!

Strip it down and it is a low tech car with basic mechanical with non exotic parts fitted, it should cost 45k, its no more advance than a Toyota Corolla and build wise it would cost far less than a Prius, it costs less than 40k retail in Japan so what, 30k buy cost, they are just being greedy and cutting out real enthusiasts, the original AE86 was not silly expensive and that's what made it a hero.

Things you can buy for less brand new that will spank it or have other merits.

WRX with 15k in your back poket
Impreza STI, just about there...
Golf GTI with a couple of options
Polo GTI with 15k in your back pocket
Megane RS250 with 10k in you back pocket...
Mazda 3 MPS with 12k in your back poket
Mazda MX5 with 10k in your back pocket
Mazda RX8 fully loaded with a few grand for wheels.

Just saying.

Me. I would buy one at 45k, I currently drive a 2011 Megane RS250 Trophy that I very much like but I would consider the Toyota version if the price was right.

The only two RWD cars there are the MX5 and RX8 as far as I can tell... That's one of the main points of the '86. If it's news, some people don't actually like FWD too much, even if it is faster in some instances.

RX8 is unreliable from what I've heard... and as for the MX5, the '86 is faster, and judging by that review I posted, more fun... Though it's fair enough to compare the two, they are in the same market, unlike pretty much all of the other cars you've mentioned IMO.

You say stripping it back it's no more advanced than a Corolla? What about the Direct Injection, lower Centre of Gravity than a 458 Italia (among other high-end cars, not to mention the '86 has a higher ride height than all of these, yet still manages to have it's CoG lower), 4 seats in such a small package. (As said in the Autocar reveiw - even the 370Z, being a much bigger car, hasn't got 4 seats)..

There are more pro's to this car than you seem to be letting on. 8)

You can buy a 2003 RX8 for 8-9k these days  Similar sort of technology as the BRZ/GT86 as well. I like the inside of the GT86, I don't like the price. It's made for the old lady commuter, but they market it like it's the next big thing for 'racers'. You know it's not Toyota getting back into sports cars because they would've at least made an attempt! (an attempt is coming at Nissan with something as wild as the amazingly successful GT-R). I personally think Toyota and Subaru knew after the GT-R, they weren't going to be able to compete with such a car (in terms of sales, looks, performance and technology wise - at this point), so they are making out that they weren't targeting that market anymore.

Like someone said; you'd have rocks in your head if you buy one new as in a year or two the value would be halved (or even less)! I'm starting to like them more, but don't see anything special. They are going a bit OTT with praising these cars for some reason... it's like the greenies are in control of the media and trying to tell the boy racers to go eco instead of gas guzzlers because it's the new 'cool' thing.

Not sold, especially at the ridiculously inflated price for essentially a new MR2 (no homo, MR2, no homo). In saying that, the MR2 cost around that new anyway, didn't it?

I agree entirely and RWD will always be more fun in certain environments and sometimes faster, being RWD it will be great on gravel and the race track too! I have owned many RWD's and most had merits, the most fun was actually a rather gutless BMW E30 M325i, spec for spec its actually not dissimilar to this car, same performance etc, only its a 30 year old car.

I was defiantly taking a devil’s advocate approach to the comparison and I can see value in the sense that it is a niche product. Much like a Porsche Cayman is expensive, the BMW 1M etc.

I do feel at 60k it is very expensive and as a new car buyer there is a point where you have to look at it for what it is, specifications do come into the equation and as a driving enthusiast and someone who drives very fast I would feel a little sour spending that money on what is quite a slow car by modern standards, I know it’s fun but even my mums Toyota Highlander would leave it for dead, that's not fun.
